Just drove back from Rohnert Park to Santa Clara. While I didn't see the worst of it, Petaluma looked a lot worse than usual. (For example, I witnessed a golf course turn into a lake.) I second the "have a safe one all."

In fact, if you Google News for 'tipsy tow', there are programs in Texas, South Dakota and elsewhere...

We need a similar service to keep people from posting drunk. If you're tipsy, a little helper will come take the mouse of your hand, make you drink a bunch of water, and tuck you into bed. BE SAFE, ALL! SEEYA NEXT YEAR!

Well, last night I did the safe thing and took a cab home. A moot point really, considering I don't have a car, and Beijing cabs cost next to nothing. Except it wasn't really the safe thing, since nobody I was with was anything more than tipsy, and our cabbie was hammered, sluring his words as he praised Chairman Mao and weaved erratically between lanes.

Utah? I didn't think anyone drank in Utah. Last time I went to SLC on business, we had to bring our own booze. That was in the pre-9/11 days when you could carry a flask on the plane.

This is nice. In my hometown, they have a volunteer service where, if you call them, two volunteers will drive to wherever you are, and one will drive you home in your car, and the other follows along to pick the first up and then both of them continue onto the next pick-up. I suspect this wouldn't work as well in larger cities, as the main website seems to indicate it's mostly in mid sized towns. It gives non-partying people something to do on New Years Eve (they run it for some of the Friday's and Saturdays around Christmas, for general holiday parties, as well, but NYE is definitely the big night), and helps keep everyone safe. At least in BC, the liability issues are covered off by the fact that everyone has government provided auto-insurance, and the government auto-insurance company is the one that coordinates the program, so they, presumably, write themselves their own insurance coverage.
