Thug Life Army. It's LiveJournal for gangsta' rappers. I think we can safely say that blogging has now arrived.

Um, it's not necessarily for "gangsta rappers". It's for anyone who is into hip-hop/rap/urban culture. I don't find it that odd that a person interested in such things would seek a forum to voice their opinions. Additionally, I don't think this is worthy of being an FPP. Your post comes across as condescending and ignorant. Flagged.

Tad sensitive cloeburner?

The damn thing is called "Thug Life Army" but you find it "condescending and ignorant" to suggest it has some relation to "gansta rap?" The top post on their blog is about Tookie; the second about Tupac. It is patently about gangsta rap, so what the hell are you offended by?

I like the post. I found it a funny find that will certainly give plenty of chances to read something to laugh at. Or, if it isn't really a joke, then something to be depressed about.

"You seem a little irritable, Kyle. You got some sand in your vagina?"

Sorry, description was a little lacking. Otherwise I love the site. It's designed well, there's no pixelated Tupac background photo with text. Though for blogs I'm a big fan of the stripped down, very niche Nick Denton type blog. I don't like blogs that try to have too much going on at once. Here's to hoping they figure out how to do a blog on such a hard-to-follow topic.

Let's face it, the urban hip-hop community has such little web presence it's hard to link to anything. It's not like a hip-hop blog can simply aggregate information from other sources.

On second thought maybe that would be a good thing. Hmmmm.

This post deserves to be flagged, but not for the reason cloeburner gives. The real problem is that there's no real content yet. The admin appears to be the only member and the only person posting, which makes this a link to a pretty boring blog.

Maybe in a few months, after a user base has developed, it'll be more interesting and then we can really argue about whether it's a community of gangstas or not.

I've seen guys do things with a set of spray cans that are just mind-boggling. People dancing in the streets. Backyard parties. Block parties. Art and poetry on the fly ripped right out of the crumbling asphalt because there isn't anything else to work with. Food bearing gardens. Wise old grandmas dispensing wisdom like fountains to all comers. The crazy, dirty homeless guy down by the liqour store spouting philosophy to beat Derrida and Camus. All pulsating together in an intricate dance so refined and sultry it'd make you weep to even know it existed.

can someone tell me how Cheddar came to mean money?
well, pieisexactlythree:

Cheddar is derived from "Cheese," precursor slang for money.

But where, you ask, did "Cheese" pick up this meaning? The answer, according to what I've heard, and to the consensus over at urban dictionary, is that "Cheese" is shortened from "Government Cheese." "Government Cheese" is given along with money in the welfare line. Corroboration here.

Is the term "urban culture" ever not co-terminous with "black culture"?

No. No element of "urban culture" is exclusive to blacks, except, perhaps, for the Mardi Gras Indians. Hip Hop, for example, has had significant contributions from Hispanics and whites. So calling urban culture "black" uneccesarily limits it. Urban culture is an outgrowth of an urban experience, and not limited to race.

Hey. Whadda 'bout: "Cheese it! It's the cops!" I thought that meant "scram."

What insecure, miserable teenager wouldn't want to join a "thug life army" and feel bad-ass?

I was in the KISS Army. And we WERE bad ass, brother.

Interesting. That imitation of a popular "urban" vernacular (now tied to the black youth identity) that is in itself the derivative another much older rural vernacular (poor southern white and black.)

And this modern imitation is some how racially controversial - when in fact it's roots are in class. At that controversial to mostly to white urban college educated people who wouldn't know a poor person unless they squeegeed their Passat.

Do people get upset when people do the Swedish Chef from the muppets? other than Swedes, that is.

Oh. And. By interesting I mean funny. And by funny I mean stupid.

Hmm, you might want to adjust that snark'o meter, tkchrist. As a term of art, or even in the context of a serious conversation, Urban Culture writ large has some pretty precise meanings. As an anthro major, I could go off on how it's related to the rise of the modern bourgoise and the centralization of power, but that's not what were talking
about here.

This is something that's irritated me ever since I first noticed that "urban" is used in coloquial speach and media discourse as shorthand for "black." I spotted a tv listing for some UPN sitcoms describing them as "urban comedy." Coloquial speach is full of codes. If I say, "I'm going to see a man about a horse," most americans understand that I'm going to take a shit, even though, etymologically, there's no thing in my statement that would indicate that. I just wish people wouldn't be such pussys and be upfront about the fact that they're talking about race, and not attempt to cloak it in terms fo geography.
