It's great to see that very long term planning is getting more attention, albeit just that little comment of the "new" New Orleans lasting about 1000 years. Still, I like that approach. When it's applied, we will perhaps need dynamic maps which actually take into consideration the fact that land features and hence human habitation elements change over time. On the other hand, is there anyone else who thinks the plan to rebuild New Orleans elsewhere might fail because of the apparently stronger relationship of the Americans with their property? Meaning - it's still probably easier in Europe to grab private land for national projects.

This is excellent advice, though nothing new to those of us who live here who haven't had our heads in the sand. Too bad the political will to do it right isn't going to exist for a long, long time.

Letting the MS river go down the Atchafalaya makes the most sense ecologically. However, among the many challenges associated with that scenario, lies Morgan City on the edge of the current Atchafalaya River channel. The city already has a flood walls that have to be closed for spring river floods. Either a lot more flood wall would have to be built or a lot of port infrastructure and several communities would be lost. Also, redirecting the river would cut Baton Rouge, the corrupt capital, out of traffic from the port of New Orleans.
