I visited Ani years ago - it's well worth the trek out there. We had the entire deserted city to ourselves. It's right on the militarised border with Armenia, and the no-mans-land feel to the place only adds the atmosphere. Thanks for bringing it back. posted by gravelshoes at 8:32 AM on January 21, 2006

Yes, excellent! I'd like to see this, if I ever visit Turkey. Thanks, Tullius! posted by carter at 9:33 AM on January 21, 2006
My wife visited Ani when she was in Turkey; I've forwarded the link to her. Nice post! posted by languagehat at 11:04 AM on January 21, 2006
No pics of Detroit?
(I'm only half-joking. The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit and other Detroit-related urban ruin photo-documentary sites altogether make for a startling and fascinating exhibition of modern urban decay.) posted by brianvan at 11:09 AM on January 21, 2006
Some of those are really nice websites, in addition to their fantastic content. Brilliant post! posted by Aknaton at 11:57 AM on January 21, 2006
Wow. Ani looks like a spectacular place to explore. And cheap -- according to Google, 5 million Turkish lira comes to about $3.70 American. Great post. posted by Gator at 12:30 PM on January 21, 2006
Thanks, Tullius! I've always wondered how future generations might see the remains of modern cities, and now, thanks to a grand failure of technology, we have a preview: Pripyat. posted by cenoxo at 12:58 PM on January 21, 2006
