Ummm... first off isn't there some international treaty that says that no one can own the planets/stars. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

I bought my brother a plot of land on Io for Christmas this year, for twenty bucks.

(Hrm... I wonder if he reads MeFi? Ah well, suprise ruined)

It's mostly just fun paper with fancy writing, but the theory behind it is that the treaty was signed that no corporate or government body could own the planets/stars, so some guy (Donald Howard seems to stick in my head) took the fact that it didn't exclude individuals to heart, and apparently laid claim to every planetary body (including moons) in the solar system.

He did it in 1980, if the box tells the truth. I imagine the Internet actually made it profitable for him.

There a website out there, but I can't remember it offhand, and can't even think of a good google search to turn it up. If this thread's still active when I get home (so I'll remember), I'll check the box and post the URL.

So why didn't this guy just claim ownership to every celestial body in the known universe? Not like his claim means anything anyway.

I'd be interested to see some offical website, if you can find it.

The only people bidding on this on eBay have got to be stupid grandparents that are "planning for the future" by buying land on the Moon.....

Why does everyone say "the Moon" anyway? Since Moon is a name, like Earth, we should just say Moon. "Moon" is a halfass name for a moon, anyway....Earth got a cool name--why didn't the Moon?
