bitter nervous humor, if you go for that sorta thing.

Rather funnier Valentine's cards: from Modern Humorist. There is also the celebrity version.

Not the most current humour, but still funny.

Yeah, rape jokes are high-larious!

A little more variety -- i.e., more than five cards -- might've made this better.

Like jokes, but without the annoying funny!

What, no touching nerd sentiments?
I want a card with this poem (not mine, found it somewhere on teh intarweb):

Roses are #FF0000,
violets are #0000FF,
all my base
are belong to you.

That's something I'd pay money for.

The comedy troupe I was in in college has been doing this for years. I must say ours have always been much funnier.

Oh come now, sure this wasn't in any way funny, but to imply rape can't sometimes funny... *sheesh* People like Sarah Silverman has used rape at a punchline in her comedy forever, and some of it was pretty great, like her version of The Aristocrats.

I remember her being asked a question about it in an interview not too long ago:

"AVC: Why is rape so funny? Is anything funnier than rape?

SS: It's not funny. It's horrifying. The ultimate violation. But, as I always say, "If you take the 'e' off of rape, you'll see it's got a bad rap!..."

"Larry is my name, insurance is my game. Raping was another game of mine. Could I interest .... hello?"

But yeah, these are lame.

dsword, "I think of you when I masturbate" was hilarious. I'd like to give those to some girls I know, but it might be a little akward.

Okay, so far we've had:

Links to rape haikus

A website with valentines that include, among others, a closeup of DP with the caption "I love you twice as much"

A flash cartoon about. . .Well, I won't ruin the surprise for you, suffice to say it's quite disgusting.

All in all, a successful thread.

I still like the youyesyou cards, even if one of them did get me in trouble a couple valentine's ago. They've changed the artwork on most of them this year which is kinda sad.

The rape card isn't funny for any reason except for it's shocking. Big whoop.
posted by Skwirl at 6:06 PM on January 29, 2006

Rape isn't funny, but good jokes can still be made of it. I'm not commenting on the funniness of these cards. But to immediately disqualify anything that mentions rape from the category of "funny" is a bad idea.

Humor is what allows us to deal with the worst we can encounter in life. To say that rape can never be funny is to say that the trauma of rape can never be overcome.

To quote Mel Brooks: Tragedy is when I get a papercut. Comedy is when you fall down a manhole and die.

I agree. Rape can be the subject of comedy. Hell, there are Jewish comedians who have based their entire careers around the Holocaust. It's just that... uh. These cards suck.
posted by brundlefly at 11:02 PM on January 29, 2006

Yeah, just to be clear I totally agree with the above two posters. These cards suck, and rape can be funny because it's horrible, not because it's just plain funny.
