Is is just me, or have Superbowl ads gotten way too predictable. Here's hoping this year offers something new. 2006 brings Fabio sinking a gondola, an approved(!) GoDaddy ad, the first ever bilingual ad, and the commercials being offered on DVD and PodCast. Also keep an eye out for muppets, macgyver and machetes.

I hate linking to heavy, but they have all the banned ads, some of which are funny (especially the anti-mac one) and some were just made to be banned. You can see previous years' ads at iFilm.

Looking over the heavy ads, it looks like every PETA ad got disapproved. Guess their strategy of being alway a bit too outrageous backfired again...

A lot of the stuff at heavy, all but PETA as far as I can tell, is just ads that have been withdrawn, never intended for the Super Bowl or even the US market sometimes. The "a hard ride" advert with the female mannequin that "becomes sexually aroused by a driving experience", is cleared by the ASA, that is, not banned (in the UK), for example. ;)

The character in the "anti-Mac" ad was an idiot.... probably unable to operate a screwdriver... the ad was just annoying... Trying to make an anti-mac ad must be difficult, what's not to like??? :) And... when is this "super bowl" thing? Is there cereal?

huronbob--i get the humor, but living where you do (as i do) you'd have to be deaf, mute, and blind to not know when the super bowl flushes down. there's always cereal at my house, and you are always welcome. although, when the game is on, i'll be at my son's house making chili and drinnking beer--not necessarily in that order.

Mach3avelli, that's a really beatiful song. Any title for it beyond "untitled"? Also, I used to be a fervent Mac-hater. Then OS X, the G5s and powebooks came out. Now I wish I could afford one. And wasn't quite as addicted to videogames as I am. And to us foreigners, it's American football. From an outsiders point of view the whole Super Bowl thing is some kind of bizarre amalgamation of the essence of North America. The half-time shows, the songs, the bloody adverts and everything surrounding the event is so overblown that I'm amazed they even bother with the football.

I actually thought that was a pretty passionate, well-done anti-mac ad. I shared many of his sentiments, back when I worked on an Avid on -- wait for it -- OS9, FIVE YEARS AGO. Now of course I work on a PC-based Avid. It sucks motherfucking ass. Give me FCP any day.

People People... These are not all advertisements, some of them are a few years old. I've seen that anti Mac one a few years back. (The Mac he is swinging is a QuickSilver vintage 2001, the iMac even older.)

I'm sure it's been thought of, but what a great, moneysaving viral advertising scheme: create an ad you know the networks will object to, attempt with every appearence of seriousness to get it placed on the superbowl knowing full well they'll never take it (have a little simulated fellatio or a character saying "fuck" just to be sure), then watch as your "banned ad" gets passed around and millions see it. You don't have to pay the millions to get it on the superbowl, hell, after the first two days you don't even have to pay for the bandwidth.

I'd seen the "anti-Mac" ad before, too. Who did it, the Swift Boaters? I thought at the time that I certainly had never had the experiences he was claiming were everyday occurrences. Oh, well, age gives perspective: I no longer care whether other people want to use an inferior operating system as long as they don't try to keep me from using my Mac.
