Jill Carroll update
February 6, 2006 11:00 PM   Subscribe

CSMonitor's Jill Carroll update As there isn't really much news about Jill Carroll, this blog has become mainly about the issues surrounding the Carroll abduction. What is Islam's perspective on foreigners? How does rampant kidnapping effect journalists? The last 'update' is about a poster of Carroll hung from Rome's city hall. Which makes me think two things: there isn't much news about Carroll's situation; why in the hell hasn't a US city hung a poster of Carroll?

I'm curious how this will play out. I was startled to see a large (and growing) number of "she's in cahoots with her kidnappers" threads on rightwing blogs lately.

Not in our culture. We tie yellow ribbons around old oak trees.

Anyone weary of that standard (I know I am) is, of course, free to start a new trend. Call your alderman.

it costs to much, and we need that money for the war.

Back in the day of embassy takeover in Teheran, George Plimpton wrote an article in Harpers suggesting that instead of obsessing over the hostages, what we ought to have done was to put a hundred thousand dollars (or some such real money figure) each into tax free trust funds which they could enjoy once released. The thinking was that the student captors would be driven crazy by the notion of wasting day after day nursemaiding a bunch of budding millionaires while they were getting incompletes on their college records.

Simpler times.
