Mexico City pictured from helicopter. If you think you live in a overcrowded noisy polluted city, think again. These picture rewrite the definitions of urban sprawl, colored stylistic chaos and rich poverty [Via Boing^2]

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes, little boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

Is it just me, or did it feel like I was playing SimCity 2000? Not being snarky here, it really did remind me of the cities I used to make back in the day.

As I was looking at the pictures (particularly the above image of low-income housing), I had this nagging feeling of deja vu, but couldn't identify exactly what it was. MikeySan nailed it with his SimCity comment. Everything is just so...artificial somehow.

Welcome to the weblog echo chamber! Interestingly, I followed the original MeFi link back by via's, and it looks like this current chain started at usemenow.com earlier that month. Anyone want to follow the links back from this BoingBoing post to our original MetaFilter post?

And yet I still want to visit Mexico City. More, even. I loved some of the buildings in the photos.

The mansions on stilts especially reminded me of Simcity 4.

On the whole, the photos make Mexico City seem quite pretty. Usually there's much more pollution here. And the aerial shots don't really convey a sense of the gritty reality on the ground.

That said, Astro Zombie, you should by all means visit. Wonderful, chaotic place. Never dull.

A look from Google Earth reveals that the fotos are true, just a little saturated.

I dunno why I would want to live there ?

I went to Mexico City for work a couple of years ago and loved it. I don't think I went more than a mile or so from my hotel, so the experience was necessarily limited, but it was still quite enjoyable.

The first thing that occurred to me was how European (not built for cars) everthing felt. And that was based on impressions of a single week in Paris a couple years before. Anyway, it was low, compressed, crowded, and very lively.

What impressed me the most was the vehicular traffic. Almost nobody appeared to strictly obey the traffic regulations, but everyone also appeared to be on the same page so it all worked out.

It most reminded me of New York City in terms of the intensity of the activity on the ground. Lots going on all at once.
