a47danger, I'd say that perusing the winners, not much of anything at all happened last year. Our mission is to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism and to promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information. Yeah, but your photo awards appear to be based on the the quality of the photography and obviously not the information content. For chrisssake they have separate award for "sports action" and "sports features." As if sports and entertainment need any more encouragement. Great photographers? You bet. Great photojournalists? Hardly.

It seems a bit odd to me that the picture that's apparently the best photo of the year is only the second best photo of people in the news of the year.

Grarup is the usual master, and this would make Walker Evans proud. I love the creepiness of this shot, and this is heartbreaking. and this is, well, .

Great photos... I saw the same thing that jacquilynne did though. And you can't tell me that this photo isn't great photojournalism. It tells the story perfectly! "Diver hits head on diving board, hurts head".

Summary: 1. Family drives car toward military checkpoint. 2. U.S. soldiers at checkpoint fire weapons at car. 3. U.S. soldiers discover newly-orphaned kids in backseat. 4. U.S. soldiers rush kids to hospital. 5. U.S. military officials: "The statement also said that military officials extended their condolences for this "unfortunate incident" and were investigating." 6. Investigation results still pending. Will probably pend for quite some time.
