Adopt a color

Adopt a color let's you name a colour for $25. Would be great to have MeFi Blue, Zeldman Orange, Kottke Yellow as standard colour names. Would make a good last minute christmas gift for a friend who's got a site. [via Fairvue]

Or, if you're not able to supply the greenbacks, you can still give a little loving to those poor nameless colors and donate a name or two.

Too bad as Matt said this appears to be a scam, I doubt that it is this easy to name a colour.
The FAQ lists the price as $25, but when you attempt to order it lists the basic price as $35. Most of the pages are "Coming Soon" The links to the Hex & RGB wizards don't work.

Can you actually go to The Library of Congress, and give a name to a colour? I used to think colour names were derived from what becomes popular, for example if a large group started calling #006699 MetaFilter Blue, it would become the name of that colour.

Besides, isn't Crayola our current overarching voice in the names of colors? (note that this is half-sarcastic, since they've gone insane with some of their color-naming...)

This is as big a scam as that company who were (and continue to) selling plots of land on the moon. No-one owns the damn moon so how can you sell plots of land there.
