Rights and Liberties Hey, Kids Spying Is Fun! [note: I had some time ago posted an NSA document showing that it was this agency that suggested domestic spying to Bush, when Bush first took office, prior to 9/11] Using cartoons, games and kid-friendly websites, the federal intelligence community is seeking to win the hearts and minds of America's children. Move over, McGruff. The trench-coated canine mascot of the National Crime Prevention Council has some youthful competition in the battle for the hearts and minds of America's children. Now in virtual training on the website of the National Security Agency are the CryptoKids, the code-makers and code-breakers of America's future.

junior Thought Police?

...At the National Reconnaissance Office's NRO Junior site, for example, an animated extra-terrestrial named Whirly Lizard shares stories--first-person accounts ostensibly written by anonymous children but eerily recited by adult voices. With all the sophistication of a Saturday-morning cartoon, these simplistic anecdotes are designed to boost patriotism and an interest in outer space. In a cyber-chapter titled "Proud to Be an American," an unidentified young author explains, "I have my teachers, my friends, my pet, my toys, my home, and my family. I have God to watch me. I love America. I love being me." ...
Ugh--it makes "just say no" seem really innocent and quaint.

Only you can take a bit out of just saying no.

I have God to watch me

That is so vile I am livid and about to vomit. Lie to children today about Santa, Lie to children tomorrow about God and what do you get ? A children that will sooner or later realize parents lied ! Who would trust a liar ? You love your parents, yet deep down you know you shouldn't trust a liar..why did they lie to me ? Did I do something wrong ?

My parents don't really love me :( What others lie did they tell to me ? Why did you lie me about God mom ?

"Ohhh but hey, you were too young to understand"

Which the children reads as ....Maybe I am stupid ? I don't think I am that intelligent :( So you get a children that is stupid because it does what stupid does..he's convinced of being stupid.

Well then maybe I'll join the army. They have strong, solid values ! They believe in something that exists, the Country ! The Nation ! My parents lied to me, I want somebody that tells me the truth no matter how harsh it is.

And then you go to Iraq..your daddy is the President..you believe there were WMDs ...and that Saddam is evil...and that terrorist did all the wrong in the world...it's kind of a miracle, I wonder who teached them to do so much with so little.

Then you get the slap..it's all about oil. No wonder you end up in depression and an alcoholic...what about seeking revenge ? I hate this fucking society.

You know, I'm not much of a fan of either the NSA ofr hyperreligious folk, but sometimes, Mefi just seems like such an alternate universe to me.
