Lazy Monday, a west coast response to SNL's "Lazy Sunday" video, is the best, but not the only fan followup. The midwest is represented by Lazy Muncie, and for a surprisingly well done version with 11 year olds lipsyncing to the original, there is Lazy 11-year-old Sunday.

There should be legislation forcing every rap video ever produced to be accompanied by another video of 11-year old kids lip-synching the same song. Think of, you know, 99 Questions. Or that crazy black and white Jay-Z video. And now imagine little kids doing it. Yeah. I could watch that shit all day.

According to this page the kids had help from dad. Much better is the mp3 on that page in which a 9-year-old and 7-year-old actually perform the rap rather than just lipsyncing it.

It's not surprising the 11 year olds can do a good "Lazy Sunday" because the original was so homemade to begin with. But if you like kids doing rap, you can't go wrong with Notorious BIG's "Sky's the Limit" (directed by Spike Jonze). Probably the most subversive video ever. I could just imagine Spike pitching it: "Puffy, it's little kids doing Biggie! It'll be awesome!" Then halfway through watching it you realize: it's little kids dressing like pimps, playas and hos typical to a rap video, and you see the bigger message.

Probably the primary thing that made the original skit "work", as was also noted on Slate, is that Parnell and friend are actually (against all odds, if you look at Chris Parnell) quite good at rapping. The parody worked because it successfully captured the art form. Like Eminem and early Beastie, it was funny because it was good music. This can't be said for the vast majority of white boy rapping parody, which, to be honest, invariably makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. I think it's the vicarious embarrassment. These two videos illustrate the rule rather than the exception. I'll give the West Coast video an 'F', because in my opinion, it didn't even capture the spirit of the West Coast (too many high-minded references: Stephen Hawking, Toulouse Lautrec - yeah right), and contained no original humor. I'll give the Muncie one a 'C', because it did manage to capture the depressing desolation of the Midwest, and some of the gags were original and worked (the overlong exhilaration at being in the presence of Jim Davis). As for the kids, Waxy guy's 7 year old neice actually rapping along, was more amusing.

Those kids have a cool dad. Only a B- on execution, but that wasn't really the point, was it? NBC cease & desists YouTube for hosting Lazy Sunday You have got to be fucking kidding me. Seriously, this is some kind of joke, right? YouTube was the #1 outlet for that and it almost overnight resparked national interest in SNL. I don't even know what to say. It's inconceivable. I cannot believe the people at NBC are that stupid. I just can't. If I were YouTube I would issue a blanket moratorium on any content from NBC or its subsidiaries. Turning away literally millions of dollars of free advertising, on someone else's bandwidth bill. Is it too early to start calling for the dumbest business decision of 2006?
