Here's a gift for all. Someone got a deceptively simple card game as a stocking stuffer. Three shapes. Three colors. Three shades. Three different numbers of objects. Put 3 things together that are completely similar or completely different, for all four variables. It's a card game that instantly sucked several of us in and felt like playing Tetris the first time. Go ahead and give it a try (note, I've been playing this for a couple hours today and I could only find 4 of the 6 possible sets).

Don't play against people who are good. You will hate them forever. As they gleefully proclaim "Set!" every ten seconds, you will sink deeper and deeper into vile loathing... You may find a set, every once in a while, but no doubt they will snatch it from under you, as you flail your limbs in a pathetic proetst.

Trust me, I've been there.

Just say no.

7 minutes 40 seconds (Dec. 27). I am improving. I still can only find 4-5 "sets" by deduction and the last one or two always seem very "random" to me.

From the answers to the sample game and the rules page it would appear that only things that are not a "set" is if you have only two of the same color/shade/shape/number in the set of three. All other combinations can be "defined" as a "set." Maybe I am interpreting the instructions wrong, or maybe I am just 66% smart and logical and 33% irrational idiot.

Tamim, you're right, but I think you're underestimating the number of possible combinations which aren't sets. There are four traits to a card (color, shape, shade, and number) with three possible values per trait. A set is a set of three cards for which the trio either have all the same value or all three values for each trait. So there are, uhh, 81 cards with 81 * 80 * 79 / 6 possible triples, of which only 256 are valid sets. That's quite limited.

[Today's puzzle completed 3 Minutes & 12 Seconds]

Thinking about it a bit further, I believe there are actually 1080 (81 * 80 * 1 / 6) possible valid sets, meaning that "good" sets are around 1.25% of possible sets. If you play long enough, you start to get better at picking them out quickly.

You guys still back here?

Aaaugh! got yesterday's game in 28 seconds, while I took over a minute, thanks to brain-freeze. My fiancee and I broke down and bought the card game a couple of weeks ago, and haven't stopped playing save for food and sleep. The card game is especially versitile, allowing you to play a lot of different games with one deck; we made up a "concentration" game, but there are others.

(By the way, congrats tamim; I haven't been able to improve on the aforementioned 49 seconds.)

Avogadro is right. This game is pretty addictive. I stopped cold-turkey after I got my time down to a minute and 12 seconds in December 31, 2000. Only recently I went back to playing it again. So gluechunk, I guess it took me a year and three months to shave 32 seconds off my time.

I don't think I can better that 40 seconds mark though. I finished today's in only 47 seconds. That's seven seconds slower than my best time. [April 13, 2002.]
