So when's he going to die in a plane crash?

yeah he could do us all a favour.

You only scratched the surface, kurtrudder. Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty of the KLF are merely puppets of the media impressario known as Tommy Westfall.

That's funny!

You mean that wasn't really Barbara Mandrell on "Justified and Ancient"??

No. It wasn't. It was Tammy Wynette.

But that's beside the point.

They are justified and they are ancient.

I think this originated as part of E2's HateQuest 2006.

For some context: The KLF's The Manual.

KLF are more famous for pulling hoaxes of hoaxes than actually pulling hoaxes. There's video of them burning something which looks like money. But nobody, by their own account, actually saw them burn one million pounds.

I tend to assume that everything is a hoax by the KLF unless I have very good evidence to the contrary.

3.2.3: You are so cynical! I, for one, see the glass as half full and I choose to believe that they did indeed burn that money.

No. It wasn't. It was Tammy Wynette.

I think you'll find it was Barbara Mandrell.

Tammy.

OK, my mistake.

It was Loretta Lynn.

It was Loretta Lynn.

Tammy.

Of course, these days, you never see Loretta and Tammy in the same place. Ever. Hmm ...

Who the hell is Pete Doherty?

Um, Google?

No, no, no--Jarvis Cocker is Google. Pete Doherty is that Amazon search thingy everyone was excited about for three days last year.

Who the hell is Pete Doherty?

It's a UK thing.

(I'll just file this post away for the next US-centric Metatalk bitch.)

He's sort of like Robbie Williams, but 40% more gutter, for marketing purposes.

It's amazing how far this story has spread, just from that one msgboard post.

Of course they burned the money. An examination of the totality of their careers couldn't lead you to any other conclusion.

How many other major pop stars have ever scrapped all sales of their back catalogue in it's totality while it was still a viable product, thereby denying themselves potential millions in royalties?

I don't buy the Pete Doherty story, but I do wish it were true.

Pete Doherty? Is that something I'd need a syringe to know about?

Nah, a roll of tinfoil or a cheap crackpipe would be more than adequate.

I totally buy it. The KLF is in fact very famous for their pranks - and this really fits in with their great book - The Manual or How To Have A Number One Hit The Easy Way.

http://www.instrumentality.com/themanual.html

This manual was used by a band to make a number one hit. It is actually a good read for anyone, especially musicians.

But I digress.

KLF were actually a _very_ competent band in their own right. Their best work is perhaps their most overlooked - KLF - Chill Out. It is the chill-out / ambient genre defining album. Probably still my favorite album of all time.

3AM Eternal is still an awesome song though.

The KLF themselves did it a few times, unfortunately so did Jive Bunny.
posted by fullerine at 5:45 AM on February 22, 2006

Did Jive Bunny really follow the manual? Doubt it.

The band who did, and had a number one in the UK, were Eidelweiss, with their song ‘Give Me Eidelweiss'. Sold two million, despite being/because it was truly fucking awful

3.2.3: You are so cynical! I, for one, see the glass as half full and I choose to believe that they did indeed burn that money.

ah, but pulling a hoax of a hoax is so much easier than the effort of pulling a hoax. it's so artless.

which is, i think, their point.

How many other major pop stars have ever scrapped all sales of their back catalogue in it's totality while it was still a viable product, thereby denying themselves potential millions in royalties?

is this why there's a timelords cd in every used or cutout bin?
