Oooh, I want one. Or all of them. Vintage high-tech, from the good folks at Worth1000. (Great idea, but I feel like even more could be done with this meme. Pointers?) [Via BoingBoing.]

They're all a bit lame really.

Sorry.

A few decent ones. Most are too obvious.

There are so many better Worth1000 contests. Though there are a couple cool ones in there most are pretty lame.

lame... obvious... lame...

Thus, you know, the caveat:

I don't know, I think the roller-clogs are pretty cool.

ODiV - Haha... some good ones there indeed. I especially like this one.

Nokia tamtam gets my vote.

Several are pretty imaginative, but too many are "it's a computer . . . MADE OF WOOD!"

What is the deal with Boing Boing and Worth 1000? I read it fairly regularly, and there seems to be a link to one of their fantastic competitions every week.

The deal is that BoingBoing is one of the most imaginative, provocative, and consistently interesting blogs out there, and Worth runs some pretty cool contests that seem solidly within BB's aesthetic.

Is this some kind of challenge where the rest of us have to figure out if you're being sarcastic?

Metafilter: BoingBoing is one of the most imaginative, provocative, and consistently interesting blogs out there

Believe it or not, I'm a sincere person in this day and age. If you know of 20 blogs that are more "imaginative, provocative and consistently interesting" than BB, please post them! (Count me a huge fan of wood s lot as well, but it's a different thang.)

Your terms are subjective of course. I stopped reading BoingBoing because everything there is just candy. You feel like you're learning something new, but you really aren't. Aesthetically, its all disposable. Looking now, I see a hoverboard made from a leaf-blower and yet another "mashup" (did I get that right?) involving the London Tube Map. Truthfully, I get infinitely more out of weblogs like Giornale Nuovo - well written, enriching, and with a distinct narrative element. I prefer Metafilter over BB because here, people actually link to things and ideas more than two months old - an odd historical story, an underrated old Hollywood star, a quirk of geography or culture or time, a lingustic puzzle.

BB seems to be more: "Look at this shiny thing which we will all forget tomorrow" and if that is what you crave as interesting then I cannot convince you otherwise. But at least I can point out why some of us, at least, find that statement not only non-obvious but also mildly startling.

Damn that's a lot of iPod jokes. Or at least, a lot of an iPod joke. Wish a few more people had taken this one in different directions.

(I do love Worth 1000, but this doesn't seem like one of their better contests. Oh well.)

My, your life must be full of mildly startling surprises. But thanks for the link to the Giornale, which is indeed interesting too.

Boing Boing is totally formulaic. You can open it any day and it's exactly the same stuff, most of it crap or totally inane. There's no imagination involved. Plus all the misinformed political rants. It's just... ugh.

This one is not the most brilliant editing job (apparently done in paint), but it's a much more amusing concept than the obvious iPod ones.

Meh. Worth1000 is sometimes amusing, but the quality of the photoshops skews toward mediocre.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I used this as a centered desktop image for a while:

I guess if you can imagine it, it can exist - yet none of these actually work...they are just images. By the time I look at one and figure out the crux of it I am bored.

Either make the real "thing", make something new, or make something beautiful.
