Only in Tucson can the Mayor and his wife get rear-ended by a stagecoach. It all happened during the annual Rodeo parade in downtown Tucson. There is a fantastic made for TV video of it attached this story.

I can't view the video. But I did learn something from the copy: Organizers say that, since horses are animals, they can be unpredictable. Huh. So horses are animals? I'm unclear on why this makes the organizers unpredictable, but it's good to know.

Is there some crappy web design company out there that makes the pages for local news affiliates? They all look the same, and I can't remember the last time I was able to view a video clip successfuly.

I saw the video, and it doesn't really show anything. Just a team of horse pulling a wagon down the street really quickly. No collisions. Because, that was what I was looking for. Horses smashing into each other, catching on fire, exploding in massive fireballs.

Not to resort to crude stereotypes — like asking if everyone in Tucson wears those funny hats — but the TV guy does say that the coach driver has some 60 years of experience. Perhaps, as the elderly sometimes do, he confused the brake with the accelerator.

They never mention of any of the horses were hurt. It's hard to imagine them NOT getting hurt after seeing the vid.

Ah, the perils of being the mayor of a hayseed city. A challenge well-met by Walkup, resplendent in his dapper cowboy hat. What famous comedian had the routine about people walking around in clothing that was fashionable 150 years ago? You don't see many folks in Victorian or Edwardian clothing, but cowboy 'outfits' (cute word)? Wheee-dogies!

other kids get Presidents' Day weekend off; we're lucky enough to celebrate THE RODEO instead. and this...this is what we get--an injured mayor and streets full of horseshit. and no fucking snow on Mt. Lemmon. also, how come there aren't ever news stories about how I hate cotton candy now because of how sticky and gross it made my hands every year at the Rodeo Day Parade? or how the smell of dung and candy and boot leather marinated in sweat makes me feel nostalgic? or how the sheer joy I felt whenever a man was flung bodily across an ankle-deep shit-stadium by a bucking bronco turned into dusty/sweaty guilt when the clowns came out? talk about traumatic!--these are the local news stories I would ever love to read, dear Star. "LITTLE BOY TRAUMATIZED BY RODEO" also also, if this incident precipitates the cessation of the World's Largest Non-Motorized Street Parade I'll be a little sad inside, but mostly happy.
