Total derail, but:

It took him 12 steps just to get from Buddy Holly to the Rolling Stones? One of the staples of the Stones' cover repertoire is Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away." So that reduces it to Buddy to Sufjan in 4 steps.

R.E.M. covered the Stones' "Paint it Black," so that's 3 steps from Buddy to Sufjan.

I think the point was to do it enough jumps to make a satisfying album. Three is good if you're playing that damn Kevin Bacon game, but not so good if you want an hour of music to listen to.

celerystick, its already changed and changing as we speak. Hype Machine used to have direct download links to almost all of their music. Now you've gotta go to the sites to get them but I still agree that this is one of the best things about the internet.

And I've come across some truly fantastic new music this way.

Back when I was a kid you could get any music off the web, even stuff copyrighted by the RIAA.

Kids these days have to sift through free stuff or risk spyware or lawsuits using p2p stuff. They actually have it worse

At least they can get whole albums as RAR files, rather then mp3s one by one.

And delmoi, did you use Audiogalaxy? do you remember just how freaking cool that program was?

I never used anything besides the campus network. :P

Actually, before I even got into collage me and a friend would sneek into one of the few computer labs that didn't require a university log on and stuff Zip disks full of Mp3s from machines in the dorms.

Then it was basically a constant smorgasbord for a couple years. Someone even wrote a web-based intranet search engine for people to use.

Finally the RIAA swooped down and busted up our little party, and a few kids ended up getting their dorm rooms raided, they just went after the #1 and #2 sharers, basically. The crazy thing was, I had just downloaded a ton of Japanese and Indian pop music just to share it and get back into the top 10.

The first p2p program I ever used was WinMX, by that time, there was tons of Spyware infested crap already out there and napster was dead. Mostly I'd just ask a friend of mine for the CD, since he knows how to get group releases right from the source.

In a few more years, there's going to be a ton of creative-commons or otherwise free to download music out there. The hard part is figuring out what you'll like. There needs to be some sort of moderation/recommendation system.
