911's a hoax in yo' town

"The TV networks aired fake video of "planes" striking the World Trade Center!" Apparantly, there were no actual on-the-ground eyewitnesses to planes crashing into the towers, no sounds of impact, and may in fact have been nuclear devices. File under "batshit insane." Although the site goes through a painstaking amount of effort to prove that the attack was hoaxed.

Have other planes crashed into other buildings and caused them to collapse? It would be easy to see the differences / similarities between other incidents. I know a U.S. bomber hit the Emmpire State Building in the 1940s, but that thing is a giant cinderblock so that explains why the building stayed up. Were the WTC buildings exceptionally poorly designed? Do other buildings tend to come down in teh same way or do they lean and fall over instead?

Simple questions, I don't know one way or another because I haven't had the inclination to really look but it is fairly straight forward, one would think.

Maybe a hologram projection was employed to keep eyewitnesses distracted.

Kozad - You get a couple million pounds of steel and concrete and misc shit moving downward, I don't see any reason why the stuff WOULDN'T collapse into it's own footprint. That's where 'down' was, after all. It takes a hell of a force to shift the direction of that much moving mass, and there just wasn't anything there to do it. A steel beam (or a bunch of them) would last about as well as so many matchsticks.

Two friends who were eyewitnesses saw planes. One, a toxic waste management expert, was on a building rooftop near the WTC. The plane flew so close overhead that he and his boss automatically ducked.

The second eyewitness, a contractor, was driving his jeep at the base of the WTC, looked up and saw the plane's tail enter the building.

Another friend was on the 55th floor of the south tower. She said the building lurched to the side violently; to her it felt like about 3 feet. Since she was the chosen fire emergency person for her office, she rushed to the bathroom to evacuate any fellow employees who might be there and to her shock found "the center of the building wasn't there", her description was that the building had lost its core.

However, the waste management friend said he was appalled the government/media stated the air quality at Ground Zero and the area nearby was as good as can be expected under the circumstances, when the air quality was in fact so awful that my friend is now suffering life-threatening illness as a result of the air he breathed that day. Even today the EPA posts this: Illness is very unlikely to result from a single, high-level exposure. Sure.

"In a November 2005 meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, Dr. David Pezant of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine presented the findings of a report on the lung function of 12,079 firefighters, many of whom worked at Ground Zero. The study found rates of pulmonary function decline up to 12 times higher than normal in firefighters exposed to the dust-filled air following the destruction of the buildings."

While not claiming it was a hoax, these academics believe "...that the government not only permitted 9/11 to occur but may even have orchestrated these events to facilitate its political agenda." But they apparently didn't watch a NOVA special on the event that appears to explain in detail why and how the towers fell after being struck.

I don't get it. Just because it might be politically expedient to fake a terrorist attack to justify a subsequent invasion and corporate ownership of middle-east oil fields because "peak oil" will hit soon and whoever owns the last remaining financiallly viable sources of oil at that point will effectively control the world through political and economic means, some people assume that 9/11 is part of a larger conspiracy. OTOH, maybe conspiracy theories are just "fun" in a twisted sort of way.
posted by Nquire at 7:34 PM on February 26, 2006

The hologram theory has been around a long time in conspiracy circles. Before this, it was part of the Princess Diana thing. Supposedly they were going use this technology to project a huge image of Diana in the sky, a la Oral Roberts and his (MC) 900 Ft Jesus, causing people to be religiously awed enough to worship her in a modern day extension of the "Diana cult". This was all tied in with a lot of other convoluted though interesting events which don't seem to have come to pass, but I guess since they had this big project coming up and all this holographic technology lying around, someone was like "Hey man...so, can that thing fake a 747?"

A lot of conspiracy theory is true. Another whole lot of it is disinfo, including things so silly that the average person ends up discounting the plausible theories along with it. Meanwhile, the hand writes, then quickly moves away, as Ron Jim Dio taught us.

Eyewitnesses? He has a ready answer for that prickly problem:

"I've been to New York and there are some people who will confirm they did not see a plane strike the WTC. Most of these eyewitnesses were never interviewed on the air (although some were)."

I assume that includes my friend who lives north of the WTC site and managed to sleep through the whole mess...

I know a U.S. bomber hit the Emmpire State Building in the 1940s, but that thing is a giant cinderblock so that explains why the building stayed up

Also, aircraft are not created equal.

A B-25's max takeoff weight is 33500 pounds (assuming it's a late-model with upgraded engines) and its cruise speed is 230mph, presumably the crash happened at a lower speed since the pilot was trying (badly) to land at Newark.

A 767's max takeoff weight is 395000 pounds, and it cruises at 500+ mph, and from all reports actually hit at something like cruising speed. Neither plane would be flying at max takeoff weight, but, hey, it'll give us a ballpark.

Anyway, plug them both into e=(mv^2)/2, and the 767s hit with about 55 times the kinetic energy of the bomber that hit the Empire State.
posted by ROU_Xenophobe at 9:59 PM on February 26, 2006

the world trade centers were made to withstand an impact from a 747

Bet not, since there was no such thing as a 747 when the towers were designed.

Look, the towers were designed to withstand an impact from a large passenger jet plane, when they were designed, in the mid 60's. Since then planes have gotten a lot bigger.

That said, the towers did withstand the plane strikes, and the time they stood allowed people to escape.

And this post is depressing, because now everyone gets to enjoy someone else's insanity. Yee-haw, in a Springer sort of way, but not really progress, if y'know what I mean.

If THEY could consolidate the media it would be much easier to control. (...oh, wait...)

If THEY could silence all the alternate methods of communication there would be no need for agitprop.

If THEY could make people suspicious of each other’s motives and make neighbors seem like strangers we’d all feel somewhat alienated by our own culture.

If THEY could set us against ourselves ala “divide and conquer” WE would have all sorts of meaningless debates on “race” issues, “religeon” “morals” and other nebulous things instead of being united on what is otherwise nearly universal common ground.

If THEY were trying to do any of these things WE would feel uneasy about the events that shape our lives and THEY would make sure WE felt powerless to change it.
