The humor mostly comes from the fact that hippies are essentially harmless and peaceful, and juxtoposing that with captions like "A group of hippies, passing around an infant prior to its ritual consumption." I agree that the machete-weilding, bomb-deploying stuff is not funny, though.

what's odd to me, is that many conservative square types (I'm expressly not calling you that, dios, I don't know you well enough) refer to anyone who looks vaguely 'unconventional,' or 'countercultural,' as a 'hippie,' even punks, most of whom would hit you if you called them one. Just an observation from somebody who used to have longer than shouldr-length hair, but liked listening to songs about desecrating corpses at the time.

No, what I meant is that I don't see this language as being on the same level as racist, anti-semitic, etc. hate speech. Obviously any actual hippies who read it and take it seriously might be offended by it, and I will defend their right to decry it to my dying breath. I just don't think the analogy of replacing "hippy" with "jew" holds. I guess my bigger point was that it's just as likely that somebody actually really feels this level of intense, visceral hatred for joggers as it is that they feel that way about hippies. In other words, it's just a joke. A lot of people don't think it's funny, and that's OK.

The best hippies I've ever met were from West Athens, Maine. I believe they started to move there as part of the "back to the land movement" ( though I could be wrong). Okay I will bite. Here is why I hate hippies and I will give you my defintion of hippies. First if you've ever attended an actual protest which was put down violently, actually worked for the causes of peace, anti-poverty groups, homelessness, legal reform or other "hippie" ideals (especially as a volunteer and I mean for more than a few hours) I have no problem with. These people have enough brains and ambition to know that real work is always required to achieve growth. I have a liberal arts degree, used to be an International Development worker, and at one time I was a card-carrying socialist (I am not American). I have not, and would not ever vote for a man of the character and substance of George Bush. So the hippies and neo hippies I hate do the following things: 1) Codemn moderate political movements/people as "sell outs" at every turn. Other than criticize, fail to carry out any other action including voting because politicans are "corrupt" or because if you become more political you are in danger of becoming more powerful and then corrupt. Neglect your career, education and ability to provide for your family for the same reason. Blame all failures on some form of political opression such as classism, racism, or the "man" instead of a lack of ambition or skills. Self Test: Before calling someone a "sell out" determine if you would trade paycheques with this person and examine your reasons for doing so. 2) Irresponsibly advocate drug use I've had once brilliant friends who smoked themselves retarded. Marijuana may not be tremendously harmful but its not exactly good for you. 3) Put foward a steadfast belief that love, peace, tolerance and negotiation are solutions to every international and local problem One, I have lived in countries which turned into total basket cases when otherwise honourable people decided they didn't care about the system and didn't want to engage it (fear of power=corruption again) or their lives were just too good and peaceful for them to be bothered. When this happens, you get taken over by foriegners, controlled by more radical extremists, or flat out killed. I've witnessed examples of all three. Put foward the belief that Hitler emerged because Germans didn't get hugged enough, or that your sense of idealism, good nature and high hopes will keep you alive in places where the infection rate of HIV/AIDS rounds off to 100% and has emergency room trauma rate comparable to a WW2 field hospital. 4) Stifle debate in an academic setting by relentlessly advocating a stance that the past 2000 years of history are irrelevant to you, because most of the decision makers were privledged white men. Assume none of the blame for the crimes even when you have benefitted from them through your parentage, and give none of the credit for the successes. 5) You've used being modern or sexually liberated as justification for breaking hearts. 6) Steal, vandalize, destroy, or use someone else's property because you don't believe they should have it. This includes parking your VW Bus/setting up camp wherever you damn well please. 7) Fail to acknowledge that the only reason a rock band signs to a record label is to sell more records. I can tell you, I never encountered even one person in Africa who said "Could you go home, and tell people to hold more benefit concerts". There are more, and I have to admit I have in mind two self-described hippie friends who I am currently furious with.

I find it somewhat tragic when I see liberal worker bees hating on hippies. Just because we might have similar enemies dosen't mean we're obliged to like eachother. And it's not like they like us much, either. And you seem oblivious to why worker bees might resent hippies. which brings me to this... Which is fine, in the end. It's not at all surprising that the word 'liberal' today is beginning to be used in the same derisive, resentful tones that 'hippy' is often used. You think of all these conservatives who go on and on about the nefarious coastal liberals and you've got to wonder that the people upstairs aren't even making an effort to be creative anymore. Though I suppose if it ain't broke... In the end, the smearing of the hippies as ineffectual and delusional has done a great deal to stifle the growth of a serious left, immediately undermine many critical positions (case in point, global warming, which, until quite recently, was exclusively the domain of hippies until the results started coming in) and the same tactics are of course providing the foundation for many of today's greatest hits.

The label of liberal carries no sense of loathing in most of the world, and I personally prefer to be called a socialist. Hippie, voluntary-poverty holds moral weight only because a person who does basically nothing has very little capacity for evil, but out of inactivity not moral superiority. If as a bloc the hippie generation were a force for good, we would be able to point to tremendous leaps forward in social programs and human rights since the late 60's. I cannot point to one leap forward on this front in North America since the early 1980's and who is in the halls of power right now? I am not terribly insulted by being called a worker bee either, when I was poor I had to compromise quite a bit on my values. I had to eat meat because I had to accept a lot of dinner invitiations etc and could not be a pain the ass. There is no way I could buy screw-in flourescent bulbs over regular light bulbs, I drove a V6 car because it was a cheap former write off instead of a more efficient one, and it was hard to knock on doors during elections when my feet and back were sore from standing on a retail sales floor all day.

Anyone besides me ever notice, what looks like a 'hippie' these days is usually a redneck? Been that way quite awhile. I've known some hippies in my time. Good people, generally speaking. But I find guys with long hair rather unattractive. Ultimately, the designation 'hippie' is totally useless. If you want to hate something, hate Diebold machines. I'm a little suprised that everyone doesn't think its satire. Yes, it's jokey, but I think it reflects a common dislike of the anti-establishment crowd. Hippies can make people feel guilty without even trying. If you tell yourself you are environmentally conscientious because you drive a small SUV, for example, your boast can be shot to hell by someone who bicycles the same route every day and is also therefore in better condition and didn't have to spend the money you spent on the vehicle and gasoline. If you tell yourself that you're unique, a leader, a free spirit, not just a cog in the machine, you might feel bad meeting someone who shows that it is actually possible to drop out of the rat race and live a relaxed, happy, healthy life that does not include all the crap you had been led to believe is necessary and is therefore necessary to work long hours for. And though it hasn't happened to me, I'm sure some hippies proselytize a bit, which would be annoying. It's bad enough that hippies make people look bad by comparison; people don't want to be told they're fucking things up through their own shortsightedness, sloth, and greed. I'll take hippies over the anti-hippy crowd any day. How can you be against people who are actively (not just theoretically) for peace and love and nature and who are against following the fashion-and-acquisitions herd?

I recall a heated conversation I had with a customer, from the time I had an auto repair business. Now, I was an OK mechanic but an awful businessman - and this led, at times, to conflict with certain customers. I'm pretty soft spoken normally, but one customer really set me off. Refering to auto mechanics, my customer began a tirade of complaints with : "You people......." Can terrorist groups publish "how to" manuals if they swap in the words "hippies" for "Jews" or "blacks" or "Americans" or "Israelis" if they just put on the covers of those - in huge black block lettering" "THIS IS SATIRE" ? It's striking to me that here on Metafilter terrorist attacks on civilians can get passed off as satire. I think people who think this is funny might do well to read "Becoming Evil" by James Waller. I suppose I once might have thought this sort of humor funny [ probably back in my pseudo-hardcore days, while I was still doing stage dives into crowds ] but later on in my life I came to a different perspective : Now, I think that such attitudes, such speech ( which I call hate speech ) in public discourse increases the likelihood those attitudes will translate into actual violence. Even in jest, "humorous" talk on mass violence creates a cultural climate in which such violence is more likely to occur.
