From GeekPress": After Michael McDermott (allegedly) went postal and killed 7 of his coworkers in a shooting spree in Wakefield, Massachusetts, several curious websurfers decided to take a look at the website Michaelmcdermott.com. The site belonged to a photographer who coincidentally had the same name, and it featured his business slogan "Nobody shoots like Mike". After receiving hundreds of e-mails, he quickly changed the front page to remove the slogan. The name appears to be used by more than one person in the US; it's not by any means certain that the wishlist you found was placed by the guy who committed the murders.

Steven: The Michael McDermott on Amazon lists a hometown that's 30 miles from Wakefield and says his nickname is "Mucko."

He was also a longtime resident of Weymouth whose nickname was coined by a nephew, and Amazon's McDermott calls himself "Uncle Mucko." I think this guy's our Huckleberry. How'd you find this, Luke?

How'd I find it? Um, I tossed his name into the search field. Amazon's Friends & Favorites is great fun for a fellow bored at work. Be the first on your block to suggest the massacre wouldn't have happened if only someone had gotten him something for Christmas! Also be the first on your block to point out that within four days, seven people were slain in both Boston and Philadelphia, yet only one is getting much attention. Is it the one in which the victims pushed drugs in a rowhouse? Or the one in which the victims pushed pencils in a Web shop? Be the first to play the race card!

Well, if we're going to get into dates, don't any of you find it strange that a good number of these non-book items were selected on Sept. 18 or, in other words, two weeks AFTER the guy's birthday -- supposedly on Sept. 4? Now, of course, there may have been a number of factors that came into play not least of which is sheer randomness as to when he filled out (or updated) the Amazon form, but hey, if it were my birthday, you could jolly well expect that I'd have the whole list made up well in advance of the great event.

Gawd, now I hope the press doesn't find out about this. The armchair psychoanalysts among them will find some way to make it collectively Indicative Of His Disturbed Mental State, like they did with "The Basketball Diaries" for Klebold and Harris, and I then I'll have to vomit. As for why they were all added on the same date, you'll find the same with a lot of items on my Amazon.com wishlist. That's because as soon as I found out about wishlists, I made one and put dozens of things on it in one day. Maybe on his birthday, he just didn't know about the feature. God knows I find it hard to stay on top of the things Amazon is constantly adding.

That too. Still have to wonder at the lack of books and music on it, though. I can't imagine a software guy not reading a lot. (He was a bona-fide software guy, right? I seem to remember reading that, but I can't find confirmation of what exactly he did at Edgewater in any news reports.) I recall reading that he was a Quality Assurance guy. If the QA guy in my office is any indication, then McDermott was a bona-fide software guy also. In a small dot-com, with one (or even a few, a few is not a lot) QA person, they need to know almost every aspect of the software and they need to be able to point out probable bug causes. He (uh, our guy, not McDermott) writes a bunch of testing and updating scripts, too.
