I am very confident that the unemployment rate figure is rubbish in one meaningful sense, but is comparable across countries and across time.If I recall correctly, we are the only country in the world that counts unemployment the way we do. The example that comes to mine is France, which is commonly belittled for it's high rate of unemployment. The problem with this comparison is that France includes anyone in the labor force that is not employed as unemployed. In the US, you have to be looking for work to be unemployed.
