the greatest song ever written

Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis. What do you reckon is the greatest song ever written? Not your favourite song, but the song you mightn't even like all that much but you KNOW is something special. For me it is a toss up between this one and Piaf's hymn a l'amour. It has to be something overwhelming that makes you ache. I went with Tom Waits because it has it all; the pathos, the bluesy piano, and wow that voice. The final couple of lines of lyrics just kill me too, the way they drop you back into reality.
This post was deleted for the following reason: this is not a good post. if you want to chat about music there are other places to do that.
Er, while I loves me some Tom, I wonder if a single link to some lyrics is the best use of a fpp.
(And the greatest song ever written is Amazing Grace)

Look, I can't argue with anything you said, even the deletion, but I'd also add Danny Boy. By the way, John Lennon was 25 when he wrote that. Amazing.

Delete.
But it's "My Song is Love Unknown", words by Samuel Crossman from "The Young Man's Meditation", to the John Ireland setting.
Cruelly, despicably, miserably ripped off by Coldplay.
(Close second is "Wayfaring Stranger"... Johnny Cash's rendition on American III: Solitary Man is chilling).

Like a Rolling Stone?
American Pie?
All you need is Love?
Happy Birthday?
The problem is with the phrase, "overwhelming that makes you ache." This is an odd definition of "great".
