High School Musical

High School Musical is becoming somewhat of a phenomenon amongst preteens and teens a like. Recently hitting the top of Billboard Charts, and drawing unprecedented amounts of traffic toThe Disney Channel's website. Yet, there are still detractors . The made-for-tv movie is also involved in a controversy related to its pricing (via digg.com) in the ITunes Music Store.

I should mention that I was first made aware of this during my brother's sleepover birthday party. The movie was incredibly popular, but not becuase of it's plot or special effects. Its popularity, at least to these 14-15 year olds, was in it's non-intended comedic value.

I can't wait to get high and watch it.

My nine-year-old daughter loves this freaking movie and has suckered me into buying a few songs off iTunes. What I don't get is why would you buy the movie when Disney seems to run the damn thing every Friday?!

btw - I just checked and both the movie and the soundtrack are floating around as torrent files....

You know, in the 150 channel universe, in the 3-4 game video game console world, with the internet, and with so many many more young people -- I've wondered if kids growing up today would have the "Family Ties" "Transformers" "GEM" "Cosby" "Nintendo" to bind them much like kids of the 1980s/early 1990s might.

You know, what will such kids talk about in college dorms? On a recent Daily Show, Nate Cordry (sp?) had a joke about "up, up, dn, dn, lft, rght, lft, right" that I would imagine only people who were between 8-25 from I'd say 1987-1990 could really only understand. The thing is almost anyone (male at least) who was that age during that time probably knew what he was talking about too.

I'd doubt you get such yield nowadays......Until you look at something like High School High. It really is very well known amongst 8-15 year olds and wow, I'm not sure why.

Disney knows what its doing though by changing the pricing scheme -- I can only seeing it add more publicity. And, you knew Jobs was going to have to toss that craziness at some point just like he has for the "subscription packages"....of stuff like, ok well, the Daily Show.

Pre-teens? My 23 year old ex-roommate loves these goddamn movies. He calls me up on the phone to let me know about these things, lord knows why. It's been going on for years, and it only gets creepier as time goes on. I mean, he's the only college graduate I know who's looking forward to spending St Patrick's Day filling out his "That's So Raven 'O Snap-a-thon'" card while giggling like a 14 year old, trying to win tickets to Ally and AJ live in Mexico City...

sweetjesus, it's time for an intervention.

narebuc: Every child who spends 5 minutes watching Disney has seen infomercials, dance "how-tos." and behind the scenes trivia about this movie. They must have advertised it for six months before it aired.

Disney will tie together this generation into an elite consumer juggernaut.

That's So Raven is a fucking shitfarm, though Kim Possible is surprisingly good.

All disney movies are funny. They are meant to appeal (in a non-comedic way) to 8 year olds, but are incredibly cheesy and tacky. I'll go watch it now (as my Tivo, being in league with disney, Tivos anything I might remotely like on disney).

Disney makes some awesome movies for their TV channel. Anyone remember Motocrossed? Johnny Tsunami? I cannot WAIT to see High School Musical.

My 11-year-old daughter has been obsessed with the movie for weeks. The usual rants about Disney and mainstream culture apply, but it seems to be good clean fun. Having been big into music myself in middle school and high school, I really can't complain. But my wife and I have banned her from humming/singing the songs in our presence, lest we lose our minds. Thank goodness for her iPod with headphones!

It's kind of cool that young kids have created a cult following for a made for TV movie that aired on basic cable.

Now let's ruin it like they did with The Land Before Time and release dozens of anoymous video sequels.

I've liked the few Kim Possibles I've watched, and the Radio Free Roscoes.

Can't think of a single other bit of tween/teen media that I've liked at all. Most of it is retarded, and I use that term in the adult manner.

There is very little that is new under the sun.

Go rent the movie "Fame" which sounds an awful lot like a precursor to the movie being discussed in this thread. :>

But, hey, there's nothing wrong with kids enjoying this movie and the surrounding hoopla. They could be getting into a lot worse things...

I've never seen this High School Musical, but - as a card-carrying Disney hater - I must nevertheless admit that, yes, Kim Possible is actually pretty funny and well-written.

The problem with "High School Musical" is its reliance on a stale plot line and incredibly seen-it-before dialogue. The story of two teens who try hard to put on a musical despite opposition from what seems the rest of the student body at their high school, there is about as much originality here to last barely one number.

That's the nice thing about kids media. They havn't seen it before.

narebuc, the 13 yr old I know watches all the same damn shows we watched as kids in the '80s. No joke. It is bizarro. ABC Family/Nick/et al. are regurgitating our cathode ray childhood.
