"Punter" is a funny word.

damn .. clearly my prediction was way off.

How peculiar. Not sure it merits a post, mind.

So it's true...Simon Cowell and Mark Burnett control everything!

I predict deletion after 23 comments, at least 17 of which will be variations on this joke.

What a dumb post.

What does this news story have to do with America?
posted by xmutex at 3:52 PM on March 22, 2006

I think the only thing particularly impressive about the prediction is that the 6th goal would be an own goal. Isn't it just the law of large numbers that eventually some fan's optimistic pre-game prediction on the internet will eventually correspond with actual results?

So, out of a bajillion (or is that gazillion?) predictions made by people last Tuesday, one(!) had a passing correlation with what actually occurred that day.

Something about monkeys typing Shakespeare ...

I see this as yet more evidence of Time Travelers leaving little clues for us to find...

Colbert was five for five on Oscar predictions. Now that's impressive.

Come on, we should totally be overreacting to this.

What xmutex said.

Interesting story, although I already read it earlier today.

Maybe this is what they're discussing in Uganda today.
posted by quantumetric at 4:22 PM on March 22, 2006

I'm far more amused by the fact that BBC thought it was interesting enough to make a news article about than the fact that it happened. They do love their football.

I have one thing to say.

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET INNNNNNNNNN YOUUU REDDDDDS!

Translation into english for americans unfamiliar with this idiom: well done you red-shirted players of soccer.

Maybe this is what they're discussing in Uganda today.

Well they do like their footy

Nice job, except Fabregas is better than Messi.

Sounds like a pretty boring game of football to me. That's only 1 touchdown.
posted by jefbla at 5:21 PM on March 22, 2006

they should go back to calling it soccer.
posted by tsarfan at 5:22 PM on March 22, 2006

How do we know it isn't fake, as in, they might have the wrong timestamps or the person might have been able to edit the post afterward or something?

Also, would the person who predicted the exact outcome like to contact me personally and give me his predictions for this weekend? I could do with the money.

Come on, we should totally be overreacting to this.

Non-compassion fatigue.

That's an amazing prediction... does this fellow have a newsletter, or perhaps a religion that I could sign up for?
posted by I Love Tacos at 6:28 PM on March 22, 2006

Wait, wait, wait....so a fan predicted his team would win a game in a blowout? No fuckin' way! And the other team would score against themselves, thus proving their incompetency? Good golly!

At least add a little more color to this linkfilter:

Nostradamus didn't pick this one, but he was close (Century 7: Verse 36). And close only matters in horseshoes and hand grenades. When we these come true? Or have they???

Earlier today I predicted my cat would poop in this litter box before running around the house as fast as possible in an insane fashion. AND THEN HE DID!

The unstated and more newsworthy subtext is that the whole game was a gigantic fix.

Spooky, of course it all just ties in with my previous prediction: "Brum are shit."

I predict that Chelsea will WIN at the weekend!

And they will be EVIL CHEATING GITS, every last one of them.

I predict Arjen Robben's head will be shot clean off by a sniper but that his hands will continue to clutch where his face used to be and that his body will roll back and too until a penalty is awarded or the full 90 minutes is up.
