2001 - The year of new reason? "There is clearly only so much that people can take in terms of stories which range from the unnecessarily alarmist to the downright silly, and the news media are at last recognising this."

Some hope.
While the bandwagon-jumping tabloids like the Daily Mail and The Sun form the total news intake and therefore the opinions of such a large proportion of the country, there will always be an audience for this type of story.

The best evidence for the shifting zeitgeist comes from a publication which always seems to mirror most accurately the mood of the nation - Readers' Digest. Whatver you think about RD, it is one of a few publications which future cultural historians will rely on to understand what was really happening in our world over the past few decades.

They're kidding, right? Otherwise, that's one hell of a big rock they're living under.

I'm reminded of one of the characters in one of Robert Anton Wilson's "Schrodinger's Cat" books, a New York City liberal who, as an experiment, tried to put himself in the mental state where Reader's Digest was not only 100% true but 100% right.
