The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services. For years, a section of the SAMHSA site dealt with the prevention and treatment of substance abuse as it specifically relates to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people. It was here. But on 11 January 2006, a Christian fundamentalist group complained about the material, and, sure enough, within two weeks the feds had pulled it off the site.

This is over a year old and now it is an issue? Was there a point to this post?

"It even had a pop-up quiz to measure homophobia-—-totally unacceptable."

The timing of the deletion and the FRC letter were not related, he said.

Yeah, right.

Everyone knows only Christians abuse substances.

Have you seen what those fuckers will do for a little wine and wafer?

This is still available. Have there been any changes made-- any at all-- to the pages targeted at other minority groups?

It was my understand that if you just ignore gay people long enough they'll go away. Or become not-gay.

Oh, and searching for "gay" on the SAMHSA site brings up plenty of useful and working links. If this really is an info-scrubbing conspiracy, it's not a very good one.

No, homosexuals can be extremely persistent.

Then again, most of the links off this page are broken. Crap. It probably is a conspiracy after all. Sorry to get anyone's hopes up.

From this page.

Correct. Studies conducted on laboratory animals and humans have proven that chronic use of MDMA produces long-lasting, perhaps permanent, damage to neurons in the brain. This damage occurs to the neurons that release serotonin in the brain and can cause memory impairment.

Actually I think a lot of those studies were debunked.

Anyway, gay people are not being targeted for government lies. Is that really that big of a problem?

The internet is confusing.

delmoi : "Actually I think a lot of those studies were debunked."

Only one study where it was claimed that a single recreational dose of MDMA could induce Parkinson's. The drug, actually administered, was methamphetamine. The issue of whether chronic MDMA use leads to (serotonergic) axonal degeneration is still unresolved, for the most part; because certain proxies indicate so (like SERT levels) but others don't (like GFAP levels).

Interesting. I was reading the links for this post and thinking "At least our fundamentalists can't make our government sentence people to death for purely religious reasons. And then I scrolled down to here.

It does strike me as a bit odd that there would need to be a section about drug abuse specifically tailored to homosexuals.
Mind you, now I can't really learn what difference sexual orientation migh have regarding substance addiction, since it's not there any more.

CynicalKnight: It does strike me as a bit odd that there would need to be a section about drug abuse specifically tailored to homosexuals.

First, substance abuse and suicide is epidemic among the gay community.

Second, sexual orientation can be an added complication because a person seeking treatment might have additional needs for confidentiality.

Third, I think in general that education and treatment programs benefit from being targeted to specific cultures and communities.

Funniest thing I've read all day.

KirkJobSluder's got it right. But is this a big loss to anyone? How many in the LGBT community even knew of this site's existence until it became a crusade victim?

It's a real shame as those SAMHSA manuals can be very informative and helpful. Oh well. Fuck.

Treating addiction requires looking at the root causes of the addictive behaviour. In the LGBTABCDEFGOMGWTFBBQ community, the reasons are often going to be slightly different, on balance, than in the heterosexual community.
