This post was deleted for the following reason: meh. What's the point? bad news happens anywhere.
The theme of this post being, "people are evil?" I agree, and you've illustrated it well.

As a Japanese resident, I'd have to say that wai-wai should be taken with a bowl of salt. Anything factual in the Mainichi newspaper articles is pretty much factual (it is, after all, the Mainichi). But anything that isn't can be tossed out the window.
Sample rewrites:
Wai-wai: "Japanese erotic manga fans can't get enough of a comic..."
Likely means: "At least one erotic manga fan, and possibly several, can't get enough of a comic..."
Wai-wai: "one of the most wildly popular manga on the market..."
Likely means: "Not the absolute worst-selling manga on the market..."
Wai-wai: "It has, the monthly notes, sold so well that reservations for advance orders have been shut off because the publishers can't keep up with demand."
Likely means: "Normally, 20 advance orders are made per month. However, because the publisher has had difficulty obtaining the underwear, advance orders have been shut off at 10 issues, until there are enough panties supplied to allow them to fill the order."
I don't dispute the factuality of the article, but anything that isn't a number or name in wai-wai should be accepted on face as distortion, unless proven otherwise.
(Case in point: I remember an article in wai-wai about someone who had killed her kids. When they asked about a corpse found in her previous apartment, she said something which I'd translate as "I am very sorry about what I did." Wai-wai translated that as "Ah, yeah. Sorry 'bout that.")

setting aside the HUGE creep factor, (and appearant lack-of-creadibility as noted above) I think
"Pedophilic promo has manga maniacs panting for pre-schooler panties" is the near perfect newspaper headline.

Second link: "You two... fight!"
Now we just need a "You! Put the radio up!" and "You! shake your junk!" and someone to slam on the brakes. Then the trifecta will be complete.

Don't get me wrong. The central points ("Sekai Hatsu Shiawase Pantsu Shokai Gentei" had a promotional giveaway of preschooler sized underwear with their January issue) is probably true. Wai-wai distorts, but as far as I know does not make up from whole cloth (no play on words intended).

From the last article:
Rorikon, the Japanese word for pedophilia
and
Even Cyzo, a glossy monthly that could kindly be termed as "broad minded" is disgusted, saying "Has the world of Rorikon stooped this low?"
So an excerpted translation is:
Has the world of Pedophilia stooped this low?
I'm thinking that sanity has been lost in this translation...

Only in New York, Only in Nova Scotia, Only in L.A., Only on IRC
It's too bad it's even on Metafilter
What is the issue here? What is the best of the web you want to share? I'll focus on that. Just let me know what you found on IRC that meant coming here to point out three news stories that are not only not unique to the locales, but not unique to any society.

"...12-gauge pistol-grip shotgun, which Kerlikowske described as "a weapon not designed for hunting purposes but for hunting people."
I think he's being misquoted here, he obviously means a 12-guage pistol-grip shotgun is not designed to hunt porpoises.

From the Seattle article:
She said the girl's boyfriend called her Saturday morning to say that they had gone to the house following an electronic dance party on Friday night — a "zombie rave."
"It's the worst phone call a mom can get," Thorne said, crying. "She shouldn't have gone to the rave. I've never approved of those things. ... I just hope to God she's alive. And if she is, she's grounded for life."
Sounds like her mom should be pissed that she left the rave, not pissed that she went to it.

I live 2 blocks from that house on Capitol Hill (in Seattle). My wife and I woke to the sounds of gun shots. I just can't imagine what those people went through... It sounds trite but my thoughts are with them...

only in atlanta - weekly dispatches from the police blotter. reports of naked people stealing meat products and running into traffic with said meat are standard fare in the ATL (though apparently not this week).

I remember wandering into what we thought was a videogame store in Akihabara, Japan, and finding the upper floors were wall to wall porn DVDs. This didnt shock me. Its Japan after all.
But what did shock me was on the ground floor at the back there were CDs containing photos of very very very young girls in underwear.
Disturbing.

Akihabara is itself disturbing. Good place to buy computer hardware, though.
