I installed the greasemonkey script that blocks all Xeni posts just to see if it worked, with no intention of keeping it. Then I forgot I'd done it. A while back I reinstalled firefox. It took me one visit to boingboing to go looking for that script again.

All I know is that there is a blog-like link filter called boing boing that is frequently competitive with other blog-like link filters such as MetaFilter and Memepool despite, apparently and notably, being the effort of far less people. If there is any compelling reason I should feel resentment towards these people, and their entertaining service made free to me, that reason certainly hasn't been aired in this thread or by its accompanying links.

Sorry, Xeni, but articles about dildos, photos of dildos, auctions for dildos, and comics about dildos are not Michelangelo's David. (Oh, and here's a hint - nudity in art is tasteful because the nudity is part of a meaningful context; focusing a 120x90 thumbnail directly on David's wedding tackle in a deliberate effort to shock excises the tastefulness.) Prior to finding the Xenifilter, reading BoingBoing consisted basically of slogging through pages of self-aggrandizement and the occasional NSFW entry to find the real content. It seems needlessly negative. I think anyone's enthusiasms and preoccupations could get irritating if they are a stranger to you; the people who post at boingboing are straightforward about things they like and their tastes. I can see how it might seem like Xeni or Cory are somewhat self-involved and narrowly interested, but the blog is just a small part of their quiddity that probably gives a distorted impression of how they are in a larger sense, especially if it's assumed to be broadly representative. Personally, and I can't think of any reasone why anyone should care, I find it really infantile and callous when people assume that being open with oneself to an audience of any size is an invitation to be evaluated in the most heartless possible way.

Xeni's all right by me. I'm not a huge Cory fan (although, as I said on a previous thread, I liked the one short story of his I read) - too much DRM for me. However, to those who commend BoingBoing just 'cause they have a lot of links and only a few people pulling the strings: they also have a huge reader base that sends them lots of tips. I have no problem with that; it gives them new and interesting material. But between blogs and reader tips, they get a lot of help.

So it might be "free" but it still costs something in terms of time to read, and it still extracts a fee (advertising, etc.) from its readers. That sort of thing breeds resentment. Yeah, the minor resentments come from the fact that it really was better at some point, and then it became dominated by the sort of things you mentioned. It's like your favorite punk band playing only Merle Haggard covers, non-ironically. Fans have the right to complain--it's an expression of their damaged affections or perceived betrayal. This might be a good spot to start listing those blogs which are markedly better than BB. Even in its diluted and dildo-esque state, it is still pretty darn good.

I've never met any of the bOINGers, but then, I've never met any Mefites, that I'm aware of, anyway. But I do think that boingboing is still one of the best weblogs there is, merely because it links to things I consistently find interesting and amusing, along with a few things I don't. I am aware other people do not find it as interesting. That is not an incorrect viewpoint, merely one that is different from my own. There are too many fucking ads on the site, but I only read the feed (which is spliced with ads, too, but I block them, so that's bearable). I've read in the past that their collective ad revenue is in the 10's of thousands of dollars per month, which would not surprise me, and may be bullshit, but if it's true, well, more power to them. Much as I loathe advertising in all its manifestations. I very much like Cory Doctorow's work, both written output and activism, and what I've seen of Mark's. I have no opinion of Xeni outside of the weblog. Her stuff on the site is usually the stuff I'm not interested in -- that doesn't mean it's bad, and it's quite certain that there are people who are interested in it. What motivates some people to build sites like the one in the post -- because they don't like someone's posts on a weblog, for christ's sakes! -- mystifies me. But such is the internet. Obsess at will, and make some adsense coin and notoriety while you're at it.

It's easy to resent the shameless self-promotion over on boingboing, but seriously, if you had as many eyeballs looking at your blog, you'd do it, too. There's a fine line here between complaining and being bitter about their success. I used to have boingboing on my startup list of tabs, but I replaced it awhile back. I still check it every now and then, though. It's sort of surprising to see some things that show up there that are really, really old news. I guess we'll never get away from that. Memes gurgle up, drop into the soup, and pop back up again and again. It does seem a little two-faced to be complaining about yahoo outing chinese reporters one week, and then exposing the person who creates a snarky site about you the next. But again, they're only human over there. Any one of us would surely be tempted to be blind to the contradiction if we were in her shoes.

stavros: Most people don't go to that kind of trouble for something they're indifferent about. I believe people build such websites out of respect for the original site. Respect for the audience if nothing else. I've enjoyed reading boingboing. When there was interaction I felt it was more of a community. Since the comments were removed I have had a couple of disagreements with a couple of entries. I posted such on my own blog and that was that. I feel a lot of the interest lately in boingboing has to do with its influence. They do have a large, and occassionly "ditto" like following. With that large an audience I believe they should try a little harder to not shoot from the hip. Sometimes a little research is required, but that's just my viewpoint. I didn't do xenisucks.com, but obviously I'm not suprised. As for the "outing" of the guy who did...he didn't really try that hard to hide it. Wait a few days -- if he ever posted on alt.sex.hot_air_balloons, we'll see a follow-up post about how it isn't really important to bring it up, but here are the links to ~~everyone~~ ~~the a-listers~~ their friends who are talking about it.

I'm surprised that an unknown nerd somewhere has a problem with an attractive woman who has a very successful blog; and therefore the unknown nerd feels the urge to start an unfunny, misogynistic spoof blog, really. I'm surprised. like the pimply kid pulling the cute girls' hair to try and be noticed, or something. Xeni is cool and the MeFi users who make fun of her would be well advised to find good stuff for this website, since BoingBoing kicks our ass every day of the week.

I love backlashes against internet celebrities. Disclaimer: I've never read BoingBoing. I know who Cory is, but I've no idea who Xeni is. However, I love backlashes as well. It seems to me that if your ego is strong enough to want to share your views with the world, then it should also be strong enough to deal with the fact that some proportion of your potential audience aren't going to like you. And if the people behind BoingBoing have ever posted links to the Star Wars Kid video, then they've got no business whatsoever complaining about other people seeking to humiliate them.

For me, the telling part of the whole thing was Xeni's "I'm not hurt AT ALL! I'm NOT! Look, here's the guy's PERSONAL DETAILS! Look at me! Still NOT HURT AT ALL!" response. A few weeks back someone put up a completely unfunny parody/response to UK Resistance. UK:R responded in the way these things should be done: they didn't respond at all, or even acknowledge its existence. Score one for effortless superiority.

Heh. Well as of today I've learned that my tolerance for Xeni + Cory is a lot higher than a lot of the commenters here. I think complaining because someone happens to flog topics that interest them on (gasp) their own blog is a bit out of line. But the parody site was really funny, there is no denying that. I would side with those who say Mark/David's contributions are the best. I think Xeni and Cory ought to concentrate on adding new stuff to the site and not flogging whatever projects they happen to be working on. But I have met Xeni briefly in person before a couple of times, and she seems totally nice and genuinely interested in her job as a reporter. She is an asset to the site for sure but just needs to tone down the "look what I'm doing" as it is a bit off-putting.

I actually liked the Xenisucks site, but from a humor standpoint. I saw it, and immediately thought: "Oh, what a nice little joke." but it appears that Xeni is taking it as a serious hate site. The tone and structure of the jabs at Xeni are funny, right? Am I reading this the wrong way?

I love how Xeni added in the personal data on the guy behind the site, sent in by some real cool internet detective. I guess the whole privacy/anonymity on the internet ends when someone makes fun of you? I don't get this. Even a cursory look at Xeni's post shows that Sharp wrote about creating the site on his blog. How is it possible for there to be any 'privacy/anonymity' claim that Xeni is somwhow violating?

Reading Xeni's petty, faux-composed response, along with Xenisucks' 27 paragraph comicbook guy-esque Usenet response, reminds me just how sad and inept social interaction on the Internet can be. 20 minutes of Miles Davis a day should be required for all routine Internet conversationalists until they learn to navigate their cyber-interactions with a little bit of cool and class. Just imagine a smooth bass line in the background before you hit post and think: 'is this rhythm congruent with my long angry string of sarcastic capslocked run-on sentences'?

Yep, Xeni's looking really bad with her handling of this. Mentioning the sites' existence *once* I can see, but putting the guy's picture and stuff up seems even creeper than the site itself. As for Xeni (and BB in general), it reminds me of Q107 - Toronto's classic rock station. You can avoid it for ten years, and then go back only to find out that it's still exactly the same stuff being played.

Hey Illovich, you know what's another facet of the weblogosphere that I get to say what I think a thing should be, and criticize sites regardless of what people 'can' do with them. Just because someone can flog their projects, doesn't mean they should. And just because something is owned by something, doesn't mean the people who use it can't criticize it now and then. The simple fact is that the site would be better if they didn't let us know about every little thing they are doing. IT has nothing to do with "it's their own fucking blog", it has to do with keeping the site high-quality. If Matt made every 10th metafilter post something about what conferences he was speaking at and what side projects he was working on, it would also lose value.

My point is that its the blog of four people who are doing shit all the time. And they talk about it. Because it's their blog, and thats where they talk about stuff that interests them. It's not about quality at all... I don't think there's a qualitative difference between them posting about some guy doing something or speaking somewhere and themselves doing the same. I assume that people blog about what interests them, and hope that their work intersects with that somehow (it makes people happier, usually). Thus, I expect them to talk about what they're doing frequently. By contrast, metafilter is not about matt or what matt finds interesting, as far as I've seen. It's set to be a blog by swarm, and so one person posting everyday about what they are doing would violate the idea itself. Plus, you get banned for self linking in an FPP.
