I remember a small bit of controversy in my high school back in 1988 when my English class prepared to view Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet. Mostly, unfortunately, over the brief nudity of Olivia Hussey's (age 16 in the film) breast. Luckily, rational minds ruled in our school and we watched the film. It's still my favorite filmed version of the play. posted by NationalKato at 8:14 AM on March 30, 2006
"greatest and most influential"? more like "every film with boobies ever" posted by mr.marx at 8:37 AM on March 30, 2006
This is fantastic, I'm really into the pre-production code part. (I love Shirley Temple's second Hollywood role as a child prostitute!) Some of the earliest videos they reference from the Edison studio and such are showing up on You Tube and Google Video. Here's 'The Kiss' from 1896. (NSFW!) And here's 'The Serpentine Dance' from 1896. posted by dgaicun at 8:38 AM on March 30, 2006
Dgaicun, do you have any advice on finding other interesting "vintage" film clips online? posted by kensanway at 8:47 AM on March 30, 2006
Yes, Prelinger archives probably has more. For instance, here's a direct link to the precode Betty Boop toon, Bamboo Isle, also referenced in the main link. posted by dgaicun at 8:53 AM on March 30, 2006
Ooo, ooo, Fascinatin' Fascism. Leni Riefenstahl's extraordinary 'Natural Beauty' segment from Olympia here (link to direct download). posted by dgaicun at 9:33 AM on March 30, 2006
NationalKato, I saw that film in my high school freshman English class as well around the same time. The teacher kind of pulled a fast one on us--there were some gasps when the boobage occurred, but none of the students thought to bring it up for fear of looking pervy. Well played on your part, Ms. Scattergood. Well played.
Anyways, I've got a stick of butter I need to find. posted by bardic at 10:12 AM on March 30, 2006
Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet
Silence filled the auditorium since the beginning of the film... as the morning sun broke through the window onto their blissful contented bodies, the anticipation grew, till suddenly, barely three~four blurry frames of exposed female breast whip by then a quick camera move occurs, and the silence is broken by a long drawn out collective "aaaauuuuuuugh!" posted by CynicalKnight at 2:24 PM on March 30, 2006
Without looking at the list, my immediate response would be The Hunger...that older movie with David Bowie and Susan Saranwrap. posted by JohnnyK at 10:55 AM on April 5, 2006
