I agree with aladfar - they knew full well this would happen and designed the contest accordingly. It doesn't look like you can access people's entries without knowing the URL (so the only people who see the "subversive" entries know what they're getting), plus there's the big disclaimer at the top of the player window. Sometimes Metafilter sucks.

I don't think the marketing idea is bad at all. Now I know more about a Tahoe than I did before. It's not a profitable marketing strategy, sure, but that's because the product sucks and the ads are honest. I liked the "Peak Oil" one - it started a bit weak (trying to make a point about walking, when really it should have just concentrated on oil consumption), but the last line hits right. "Peak Oil is here. Maybe you should walk." It's not funny, but it's effective. Good copy.

The saying 'any publicity is good publicity' is really only applicable if your brand/name recognition is below a certain point in the general population. The idea is that even if you get bad press, if only 40% of the people knew about you before, and 80% hear about you through some bad press, thats 40% more that know about you now. Chances are, a portion of those are going to forget the press but remember the brand. If everyone already has heard of you, bad press is just bad press since everyone already knows about you. Most of Chevy's market has heard of the Tahoe. Reiterating that its a gaz guzzling hunk of over-compensating garbage is not going to help any, viral marketing scheme or no.

I used to work for the interactive department (may it rest in peace) of the ad agency that handles the GM account in Canada. We wanted to do something very similar to this a number of times with different product launches (usually Pontiac stuff, because of their market focus). You have no idea of how hard it is to get something like this past the brand managers. They are extremely conservative, because they only hold the position for a few years (GM runs its management like the British military run their officer corps; you get moved from division to division until you reach your Peter Principle end), and they desperately don't want to screw up. Kudos to Campbell Ewald (the ad agency is the registrant of the domain, which is unusual, GM has a policy of owning everything with their name on it) for getting this through. I'm sure the other agencies in different markets want to know how they did it ;)

The irony is, GM and Chevy are part of a group of car manufacturers that are actually making an effort to be kinder to the environment. The Tahoe is one of their line of FlexFuel vehicles (they've been out a couple of years now,) that accept E85 ethanol -- a hybrid fuel made of 85% corn-based ethanol and 15% gasoline. FlexFuel vehicles can run on E85 ethanol, gasoline or any blend of both. GM's been running a campaign called "Live Green Go Yellow" which would probably be more successful if it had a little more publicity. Chevy has said that the 2007 Tahoe gets better gas mileage and produces less air pollution than its predecessors although I'm not aware of any independent tests. Of course, it's still light-years ahead of the Hummer™. :)

Just for the record, I think up above delmoi listed shoeburyness's ad as mine. Here's my take on it again. No, that one isn't mine-- not sure whose it is. The one under my name isn't mine either. Mine was more sunflowery and eco-smuggity. Funambulist's was hysterical. Chococat, that Har Mar guy looks to me like Davis Thewlis got chubby and got Ron Jeremy's haircut. Weirdness.

Thanks, guys. :D The shorter bits were the original length of that particular clip. Or at least that's how it seemed when I linked them together. I bet it's almost worth the effort to try and extract the clips from the flash (probably .flv files) and doing something up in Vegas...hmm.
