yeah, but it's DR. TRAN!!!
I remember crying from laughing too hard when I first saw this at Spike & Mike's festival. Seriously brilliant. posted by Parannoyed at 12:42 PM on March 31, 2006
That was pretty irritating. posted by 327.ca at 12:42 PM on March 31, 2006

That would benefit from having a good two minutes trimmed off of it.
But the other five minutes?

I dunno, it seems to be one joke agonizingly stretched into a multi-minute sketch. It reminds me of the darkest days of Saturday Night Live... "you lika da jooose, hah?" posted by illovich at 12:48 PM on March 31, 2006
I love Dr. Tran, but if you could find me a link to the same group's "Roybertitos 60 second Spot," you would be awesome. posted by haplesschild at 12:50 PM on March 31, 2006
I remember seeing this over a year ago. It's good, but I'm surprised it hadn't shown up earlier here. posted by clockworkjoe at 12:51 PM on March 31, 2006
Too long, but has some pretty funny moments. posted by brain_drain at 12:59 PM on March 31, 2006
Okay, I skimmed through most of it, but "HICKORY SMOKED HORSE BUTTHOLES" got me... posted by BobFrapples at 1:00 PM on March 31, 2006
I actually did laugh. Yeah, the hickory smoked horse buttholes got me too, lol! posted by nickyskye at 1:02 PM on March 31, 2006
I saw this ages ago, and now, I can finally show it to my friends. Who will shortly stop being friends with me. posted by dougunderscorenelso at 1:03 PM on March 31, 2006
so the joke is the kid is not dr. tran and the announcer ignores this fact and that goes on for about five minutes? posted by undule at 1:50 PM on March 31, 2006
I saw this at Spike & Mike's too. Before the show they handed out 3D glasses. You were supposed to put them on when the 3D part of Dr Tran started. Well, here we all are holding our cheesy little glasses, the film voiceover tells us to put them on, then calls us idiots as Dr. Tran has no 3D parts. Or something like that, there was much beer involved that night. Printing out and distributing 3D glasses seems a bit out of the way to go for a simple joke. I still have them. They're pretty handy for web 3D stuff. posted by skallas at 1:53 PM on March 31, 2006

Well, this is Mike & Spike we're talking about. Fans often had that years festival guide/brochure on their fridge. They used to have a promo where you could get in free if you brought your whole damn fridge with the flyer attached to it. I saw some really odd fridges. They were often filled with cold beer. I saw one guy who had three people in his fridge, trying to sneak them in. (Yeah, I dunno how they didn't suffocate. Stealth air holes, maybe.)
mildy funny, yet culturally offensive. always a great combo!!
Culturally offensive to who? Vietnamese? Americans? Hollywood? Doctors? Tran? Hickory smoked horse anuses? All of the above?
I love how it starts out like "Ooo haha looky at the goofy generic Asian kid!" and then just rips America and Hollywood a brand new hickory smoked horse anus, while little Tran just is trying to go about his normal day in a fairly traditional (if overtly cartoonish) Vietnamese setting. There's a few little clues in there that make Tran decidedly not just another generic Asian being made fun of, his name being the least of these.
Also, I love the length. It's just long enough to get really, seriously annoyed at Mr. Hollywood announcer, while Tran gets aggravated right up to the point of almost, but not quite, flipping the fuck out and actually kicking some ass. posted by loquacious at 2:16 PM on March 31, 2006
I lost the 3D glasses. (I'm really just chiming in to say, "I saw this years ago, aren't I cool?" I know, I suck.) posted by Skwirl at 3:00 PM on March 31, 2006
The background music was used in Monty Python's "Olympic Hide and Seek". Weird. posted by jiawen at 3:17 PM on March 31, 2006
