APRIL FOOLS! [more inside]
posted by Eideteker (40 comments total)

This post was deleted for the following reason: you spent the day irritating everyone so you could be more Meta than Meta by linking to your own thread.

In the study of mythology, folklore and religion, a trickster is a god, goddess, spirit, human hero or anthropomorphic animal who plays pranks or otherwise disobeys normal rules and norms of behaviour.

Tricksters come in all forms, from all cultures. Notable examples include Br'er Rabbit, Odysseus, Eshu, Raven, and Loki; most or all of whom you are likely familiar with.

I saw the Jesus Fish! I saw it floating through the sky on ethereal clouds made of blood mist.

Did the Jesus Fish pass over you without leaving a message? You are not worth the salt in your blood, vermin. Fish has spoken to me.

"Posted at 12:02 EST on April 2nd ? This is so yesterday."

It would have been up at 11:59, but I got a ColdFusion error (and that's no joke!).

12:02 is my time!

It is still April 1 here. And the blood mist is in my eyes.

APRIL (2nd) FOOLS!

Well, he certainly did work hard on that, didn't he?
Yes, he did, sir, he most definitely did work hard on it.
And he spent a great deal of time on it, didn't he?
Oh, yes; he spent a great deal of time on it, all right. Most of the day, it appears.
Well, then; should we still beat him or what, then?
Well, I'd say at this point, sir, he's really given us many options; we can now beat him for working hard at it, we can beat him for spending a great deal of time at it, or we could continue to beat him on general principles.
Hmm. Conceivably, then, we could beat him for all three reasons, yes? Thrice-beaten, as it were?
Well, that would be a great deal of beating, sir.

Swear to God, I think I read this same passage on tricksters in a Clive Barker book the other day..

Wow Eideteker - when you put your mind to something...

I should make you a project manager.

So, what's the point you're trying to make? That nobody likes a jackass? That people have been pissed off by jackasses for thousands of years?

Where's the joke? Not seeing it.
posted by Galvatron at 9:38 PM on April 1, 2006

Baby_Balrog: Lots of depth and more reading there in the sublinks. I didn't want to link the wikipedia article for EVERY trickster, but the links on the wiki article for each are enough food for years of reading.

Galvatron: There's no joke; unless you're laughing. I have been, all day, but not out of malice. This post is whatever you take from it. Some people can be too uptight. Some people expect meaning where there is none. Some people can annoy others without meaning to. Some websites will ignore a certain behavior, some will reward it, and some will punish it. Some people can be a lot better at sticking with something than they thought they could be. Two words can have an impact, depending on how they're used. Wishing someone a happy holiday can be really irritating if done indiscriminately. It's possible to go from MeFi zero to martyr in a single day (and right back, the next; I'm sure). No matter how convoluted your thinking, someone will figure it out. And I can be sarcastic and serious at the same time. Wow, it's like, an object lesson, but it's completely subjective, man.

This isn't a philosophy class, and it's not my dissertation. Whatever I could type, you will just dismiss as flakey pseudointellectualism, right? So why bother?

I'm only sorry that I couldn't make every individual MeFite smile with a single gesture. But to those who are smiling, thank you.

But unlike tricksters of myth, Eideteker hasn't taken to the roads to be forever in transit. He has returned to society.

"But unlike tricksters of myth, Eideteker hasn't taken to the roads to be forever in transit. He has returned to society."

Nah, I'm still a smugly antisocial, self-righteous ass. But at least I'm honest about it.

But OHNO S! I'm overmoderating my own FPP. To the MetaTalkmobile!

ON PREVIEW: ag, I could've sworn Bugs was listed on one of the pages I linked to.

The only way that this post could be reconciled is if Eideteker makes it all up to us.. personally.
I need my transmission rebuilt, and by barbells moved up to the attic. But that's just me.

Eideteker, can you do me a solid...?

APRIL FOOLS! your own April (2nd) Fools post in the comments, like you did all day. It will complete the circle. One will be come one with itself as it was written. And some other stuff.
posted by rollbiz at 10:20 PM on April 1, 2006

Sorry, rollbiz. My rules were that I would post "APRIL FOOLS!" to every forum post I read timestamped between 12:00 and 23:59 April 1st. You can thank ColdFusion for not letting me post when I wanted to.

I know, I know. I was looking forward to it, too.
posted by Eideteker at 10:28 PM on April 1, 2006

And now the circle is complete.

(I love you guys! No, seriously!)

a circle with three sides is not a circle.

So Loki, you spent the day irritating everyone so you could be more Meta than Meta by linking to your own thread.

Clever.

Would it shock you that my superhero alterego is MetaMan?

And you know what, I get that people were irritated, but that was far beyond my intention. I won't go so far as to suggest that people irritated themselves or let themselves get all worked up over nothing, because it does take two to tango.

Was it any more or less irritating than signing all your comments? --Todd Lokken.

Also, "do me a solid" is not actually a scatological reference. Learn something new every day.
posted by Eideteker at 10:53 PM on April 1, 2006

Eideteker, whatever you may tell yourself, this had nothing whatsoever to do with us. It was all about you.

"Look at me!" screamed Eideteker, over and over. "I'm here!"
posted by Malor at 12:49 AM on April 2, 2006

a circle with three sides is not a circle.

It is if all three sides describe a third-of-a-circle arc and are joined end to end in a continuous chain.
posted by nthdegx at 12:49 AM on April 2, 2006

That is both mathematical and sound. Stop talking.

Poisson D'Avril!
posted by Busithoth at 6:43 AM on April 2, 2006

So your trick was to post "APRIL FOOLS!" in every thread, followed by a FPP that links to itself? For this, you consider yourself a trickster, a martyr? You ought to study the legendary exploits of pretty_generic and dhoyt. Compare your work to theirs, then kill yourself.
posted by ryanrs at 7:02 AM on April 2, 2006

Malor: It only became about me when people chose to single me out. None of the other sites I frequent said boo.

ryanrse: Your capacity for outrage is only exceeded by your lust for hyperbole. I hope each of your stress-induced heart attacks is more fun than the last! What's really funny is that you will end up the one who kills himself, and that makes me sad. Have you considered talking to a therapist? Seriously, man, I'm worried about you.

*psst!* The martyr comment on MeTa wasn't made by one of my sock puppets, if that's what you're thinking.

"you consider yourself a trickster"
Who is considering who what? I never laid claim to that title. Everything that's happened here, with the exception of my actual comments and the April-Fools-related FPP has been completely in the minds of you, the viewers. Are you making your own hell, or your own heaven?
