Beautiful pictures. If they were only a bit larger, I would use some of these for my desktop. Although the sunsets pics are what I see from my deck every day, light pollution makes most of the night time astronomical sightings difficult for me to view unless I drive an hour or so.

muddlylemon: Sunday, it went from bright and sunny to green sky monsoon season with hail in less than 15 minutes. (For the rest of you non-Missourians, the running joke is, if you don't like the weather, stick around... it'll change.)

Enron: That joke is true most anywhere. But lately, in the Mississippi Valley, it has been "if you don't like the weather, wait a couple of hours, and it'll kick your ass."

The skies of Missouri this Sunday: Mostly green and tornado-y.

Third tornado warning so far this year -- in the Independent City of St. Louis. This is just a wee bit above normal.

A quick count shows that we've had 7 thunderstorms so far this year, six of which had Severe Warnings over the city, three of which had tornado warnings.

Given that it is April 3rd, this is a little more active than I like.

ObComment: Great pics, nice find hortense.

Back to the subdiscussion, NWS St. Louis (LSX) has a brief page (more coming) about yesterday's storm line.

The storm reports map from the NOAA Severe Prediction Center that they've posted is pretty dramatic. I think this is a permanent link to that map, with text detail as well.

I was about to dismiss this site as another case of "where I live is more amazing than where you live" -- and then I saw that. OK, that's pretty amazing!

That's awesome.

Thank you very much.

My Mizz experience extends only to St. Louis, and I don't recall the skies being that awesome. Now Montana. That place is beautiful. (And Texas has awesome skies. Of course.)

If you thought that one was fun, take a look at this from March 12th.

A big chunk of Missouri plus a line through Illinois is solid red. (Red dots=reported tornadoes)

I just moved to Missouri in August, so this is my first tornado season. So far I hate it (tornado season, not MO). The sirens are eerie, the kids freak right the heck out, and I have NEVER seen sky that particular shade of alien ectoplasm green. I've never seen clouds move so fast and in a visible circular motion. I keep wondering if the basement is really going to save me, and thanking god there's a tv down there so we can keep watching the weather if we are sent down to ride out the storm. The change in pressure messes up my ears and makes me uneasy, and I can't stop humming "do di do do doo doo" (you know, the music in the Wizard of Oz that plays whenever Miss Gulch rides by on her bicycle, before she turns into the Wicked Witch of the West).

Having said all that - my god are the skies gorgeous sometimes, and because it's so unbelievably flat you can see them for miles and miles and miles. Lovely pictures, fantastic post.

jennaratrix: good luck during the storms. Hopefully they miss you. Living where I have in my life, I have been right in the middle of tornado grounds. I suspect that I heard the tornado sirens about a dozen times. Still to this day, I have not seen or been directly effected by a tornado (knock on wood).

Best of luck to you.

You must live in the northern half of the state. It's quite hilly here in the Southwest portion... very Ireland-esque.

Beautiful photos - I've never been to Missouri, but that almost makes me want to visit. I'm from Oregon, and while I'd love to think that we have some of the most gorgeous landscapes around, we just don't get skies like that. I wonder what the difference is?
