That man is a damned genius. posted by kristin at 11:55 AM on January 4, 2001
Is it a man? With a first name of "Marsette"? posted by acridrabbit at 12:02 PM on January 4, 2001
Actually, I prefer the "pork" bit in the beginning.. only because I've done the same thing posted by tj at 12:12 PM on January 4, 2001
Of course this was the first thing I thought of when someone got this for us as a wedding present! 10 months ago, back when they were new and not widelty available.
I want to make it controllable from my PC, so I can write a winamp plugin that does beat detection, etc, so it will slap its tail to any song.
Of course I'm lazy and easily distracted, so I'll be lucky if I sit down and implement this hack, let alone come up with my own.
I'm glad he put this online! posted by mutagen at 1:54 PM on January 4, 2001
why do you assume that the person who did this lovely hack was male?
Um, maybe because of the picture on hishome page (available with a single click on his name)?
It's nice to try to be open-minded, but some people still are definitively male or female even in the 21st century. posted by kindall at 8:43 PM on January 4, 2001
Alright, fine. But his name is Marsette, the "ette" leading to my thinking - "hey, that's not a guy, is it?"
And your snark-ish "available with a single click" comment ignores basic useability theory/studies ... which say that the majority of users are lookng for someone to link to/credit/quote at the bottom of the page.
The main thing I objected to is that folks automatically assume a genius hacker/techie type is male.
I understand where you're coming from. I spent several minutes looking for the "shopping cart" button on an store site once, and it was right where I expected it to be, and I still didn't see it. Snarkish? Well, okay, but so was your "you still haven't told me why you think it's a guy."
I agree totally that it's annoying when people assume genius hackers to be male. It's even more annoying that this assumption turns out to be true something like 90% of the time. The world needs more female genius hackers. (The only female genius hacker I know personally used to be a guy.) posted by kindall at 9:52 PM on January 4, 2001
