Weird. It looks like all the shots under normal light are shot right after the blacklight tattoo was done so they look bad but claim it will be invisible. I wonder what these people's arms look like several months afterwards -- is it really transparent under normal light or does the scarring give it away?

In one of Penn and Teller's books they talk about getting a tattoo without any ink at all. They said the scaring was visible, but eventually (and regrettably to their minds) faded. They also said it hurt more.

I had thought seriously about getting one of these a few years back, and it would be my first tattoo. But a few people who already had ink steered me away from it, saying it leeched back into your skin and eventually more or less faded away (in say a couple of years, as opposed to the 30 or more years required for a regular ink tattoo).

This encourages me to re-investigate this option.

And as for the idea itself... pretty cool, but how about I just get some black light reactive ink, and draw on myself before going out to the club for a night? My exposure to black lights is pretty limited at best, so I think I'll preserve my tattoo budget for ones that people can actually see.

CunningLinguist, getting these tattoos causes damage to the skin just as any tattoo does. So, when it is fresh, there is scabbing, redness, and raised skin. Since there are no visible ink lines, the tattoos would look more like brands. When they have healed, the tattoos are not visible in normal light and unless the person has heavy scaring, there may be no real visual indicator that something has been done.

With much experience in this, I can say: sweat and blacklight reactive ink (actually, highlighter ink works fine, as it doesn't stick out too much in plain light, and glows yellow-green under blacklight) start out well, but the night ends with an undifferentiated glowing mass of yellow forearms.

I would never get a tattoo for a multitude of reasons, so I'm shocked at how interesting this was when I first saw it. The bones look good, but the guy who has the crosshatch on his head has some poor fill gradation. Not that there are many "purists" in the mainstream of tattoo culture, but isn't this substance above and beyond something that could be considered an ancient art form? I suppose it all goes hand in hand though, see: gaudy "tribal" outlines on forearms. Rest assured that when we're serialized The Mark will be made with FDA approved Spectral Marking Pigment.

Quote from a friend of Space Coyote on Metachat: "Actually they aren't invisible, they look like shitty white ink tattoos under normal conditions and you can't really make it out a lot of the time, looks more like a scar. At least what I've seen, heard."

So, actually, the information comes through Somebody → Space Coyote's friend → Space Coyote → Me, so take it with sodium chloride.
