I'd have so many questions as to how they created a DB/Image server that could work with the GoogleAPI that way. That's the really neat part.

Oh, that, and knowing where to gather Arthas' Tears! Woot!

cavalier:

Most likely, from what I've seen of the new V2 of the API for Google Maps is that they just used overlays on top of the base map data. I wrote a few V1 Gmap hacks, but I haven't had time to go back and explore V2 fully. So its just a guess.

Is there anything on those two islands south of the continent? I've never seen those before.

It's interesting to see how poorly a lot of the zones mesh together. The Un'Goro crater has a pretty big empty space right below it, and Silithus has no coast, but it probably should.

So I'm zooming around on the "right" continent. No idea what it's called, and I find this BIG round pink circle in the middle upper portion, that looks like maybe a giant sphere of cotton candy half enveloping a city. Can a WOWer help me out? There's no name on this thing, what is it?

It's the ruins of the city of Dalaran - the mage city of Warcraft 3 - inside are the arch-mages of the former human kingdom holding the bubble together to protect the city.

***SPOILER***

There's a really kickass cinematic in Warcraft 3 where this huge fucking demon stands on a cliff dramatically overlooking the city. He draws some incredibly complex arcane symbols in the dirt in front of him, scoops up a handful of dust from the center of the symbols and lets it drift down - it just hangs there in the air in a perfect replica of the city. Then he starts sweeping his arms through the dust replica in front of him and you hear the sounds of the towers of the city shattering in the distance, people screaming, etc. Presumably the arch-mages that survived are inside that bubble blocking out the rest of the world.

http://mapwow.com/?lat=-179.0490174293518&lng=85.00896994559837&zoom=1
Much of the terrain is dead flat and/or untextured and/or having huge pits into death. I actually walked there from the southwest corner (but I wasn't able to come up with any kewl sploitz).

Closing on two years since I played, crunchland, but IIRC there's no way to get there since the devs took the slope-strafing/hopping bug out of the game back in beta phase 4. Too bad - I had a lot of fun dancing around on top of the entrance gates to Stormwind, /msg ing people walking in to "look up" and then jumping out of the sky on top of them when they paused.

Any current players know if you can still do that? I'm curious.

This blocked all the "secret" paths up to the airstrip. I was up there before it closed. Lots of stuff up there. There's a flight path and a blocked hallway to Ironforge, so I assume they'll open it at some point.

Does anyone know how to walk to the dwarven airstrip near Ironforge?

As a friend of mine recently found out, there is a way to get up there. If you search the net you should be able to find it.

If you do that and go, you'll find out what he did: Not only is it incredibly boring up there, but if a blizzard employee notices you up there, you get a free 3 day suspension.

(another friend suspects that this may be due to a weird bug in the fishing code which apparently allows you to sit in a newb zone with a low fishing score and cast into a higher zone and fish from that fish table.

How this comes into play with the airstrip I have no idea, since it's between Dun Morogh and the Wetlands, which is hardly a high level zone)

Back when WoW first came online, you could jump the zone from Dun Morogh fairly easily.

Along the same lines, there is also a GM island which some toons apparently made it to a little while back and were subsequently banned (not suspended, banned). Or so it was reported on the forums, to which a GM came in and did not deny the report at all, but rather said if that were to happen, it must be through using exploits and is a bannable offense.
