ooh, it has declassified documents from her trip to the us in 1975. fascinating.

actually, i think it's neat idea to do for "contemporary histroy", i just don't like the subject matter so much.

Still not dead, for fuck's sake. Let's hope she kicks it over the Summer - street parties are no fun in the rain.

He still loves The Housemartins?

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends
the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just
squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and
dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between
justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you"
straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you
haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being
blown to bits or beaten and maimed

Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down

While I cannot - nay, dare not - guess as to the Sgt.'s motivation for persistent hull-tagging, I wonder if if he seeks to answer a heartfelt prayer.

My only need viz. Margaret Thatcher is her scheduled date of parting from this earth. I shall drink some milk to celebrate.

Er...the hull things more of a tradition now than anything else really - perhaps its to remind me that i still owe dennetts off licence on beverley road 40 quid - i'll get round to it.
Can't say i'm a fan of her myself - but something prompted me to post this link.

My Thatcher-related need is for her to be buried on land, because I'll have trouble tap-dancing on her grave, if they bury her at sea.

My old mum was an extremely apolitical woman. Margaret Thatcher was the only person to ever rouse her to any form of political protest.

This website makes no mention of her popular early title, Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher.

as someone who had to live through her reign I'd like to know how much Margaret Thatcher is required for your "essential Margaret Thatcher" needs. Very, very, very little in my opinion.

Where do you go if you need to think "Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day! Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day!"?
posted by jonp72 at 9:08 AM on May 12, 2006

I believe there are several mental institutions that can address that need jonp72. If your idea was to delay orgasm then "Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day" is certainly effective, so long as you are trying to delay orgasm for ever after.

Can someone please explain to me why British people hate Margaret Thatcher so vehemently? I understand that the changes she pushed through were hard, but isn't it clear that without them, the UK would be in terrible shape now?

What am I missing?
posted by quiet at 8:59 AM on May 13, 2006

Er... Margaret Thatcher was responsible for the terrible shape of the current social order? She was the one who heralded the "me, me, me" generation? She was mates with Ronald "Let's push the world to the brink of war" Reagan and General "Are you enoying the electricity running through your testes" Pinochet? She hung out with P.W. Botha in attempts to stop the sanctions against South Africa. She presided over one of the most corrupt governments in recent British memory? She was the one who guaranteed me future osteoporosis via the abduction of my milk? Her son was involved in illegal arms dealing (along with pretty much half the cabinet) and she managed to deflect most of the heat off of him with her political connections.

She did two good things though (imho), as a chemist in her pre-political days she recognised the danger of global warming. She also was a leading factor in allowing council house tennants to purchase their homes.

She was still a cow.

longbaugh, permit me to add to your list, the poll tax, the dismantling of the GLC, the cynical undermining of further education through massive funding cuts, an irrational fundamentalist zeal for privatization that is directly responsible for the current abysmal state of the rail system and the managerial fiasco that was internal markets in the health service from which it's never really recovered, a massive burocratization of all public services, the annihilation of Britain's coal-mining industry and disregard for manufacturing industry in general, playing to the zenophobic euroskeptics and so disadvantaging UK industry by avoiding monetary union, and engineering a ridiculous war in order to benefit her friends in the arms trade and save her from election defeat.

Section 28 ("The amendment stated that a local authority 'shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality' or 'promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship').

Abolition of not just the GLC but all the English metropolitan councils.

The cynical use of Scotland as a test ground for controversial policies (see Poll Tax).

Not promoting Alan Clark to a position of real power and influence where he could have had some serious fun.

This just needs repeating again. She (along with Lang, Forsyth and Rifkind) ruined the lives of many, many people and I'd love the chance to crap on her face grave.
