In the end, she decided to have all the plugs and tubes pulled and be put in hospice. She was in a bad way and knew her body couldn't take any more. I will always be proud of her for making her own decisions at the end. She died, peacefully, in her sleep, with no one poking or prodding her every few hours.

I had very little luck obtaining chantrelles in Sydney but I was recently at the Central Markets down in Adelaide and enthusiastically enquired of the vendors with the hope of obtaining some. I was assured by a stall vendor that they are not available fresh in Australia but could be purchased in a dried form from him (along with some morels). I proceeded to do so at a ridiculous price and was subsequently disappointed with my culinary outcomes. But hey MiHail, I found someone who knew what they were.

Australia is a mushroom deficient country Unless you are looking for Asian varieties, which you can get imported from Asia or grown in Australia at very low prices. Maybe Melbourne is more obsessed with food than Sydney, but I have seen fresh mushrooms of many sorts here. Not quite the variety that I have seen at Borough market or Campo Dei Fiori market admittedly. But the prices of these are fairly astronomical. You could always try growing your own. /mushroom market stall update

Unless you are looking for Asian varieties You'll get no argument from me there, I live in Ashfield. Other than those and Swiss Brown or Field there's not much else to be had and certainly nothing along the lines of a Chantrelle or Morel. My local providore in Five Dock does import whole, fresh (frozen) Porcini mushrooms. I hope this digression is not seen as a derail from what is ostensibly an obit thread. I think MiHail would appreciate it anyway.

wtf is a chanterelle? Putting the word into Google would turn up this info about chanterelle mushrooms. For those unfamiliar with them, here are some images of different types of edible mushrooms and a little about their subtle, complex flavors. What does the '.' mean? I think it's used in threads about someone who has died as a kind of abbreviated signing of the guestbook, a simplified recognition. We're all wasting our life on the internet. Why post about whatever stupid crap here when our time is so limited? I disagree that all of of us are wasting time on the internet, as I think it is very much like time spent doing anything else meaningful in one's life, learning, sharing, reading books, newspapers or poetry, reading or writing letters, communicating and connecting with people, getting to know people's ideas, thoughts, opinions, aspects of their character and sharing aspects of one's own, enjoying art, expressing feelings, laughing... After physical survival has been accomplished, I don't think any one sense is more valuable than any other. It's a matter of personal preference what senses one enjoys and puts effort into experiencing. Time spent touching may or may not be more valuable than time spent tasting, smelling, hearing or seeing. Time spent doing tangible things may or may not be more important to one's life than time spent doing intangible things. It may have been difficult for MiHail to go out and do a lot, especially with the illness she was suffering. But even if she could have done anything, I'm glad she came here and shared her thoughts and company.

Respect for respect for the dead. I didn't know the lady (as for most here), but maybe this raises a few questions? 120 something posts here, and almost all are in a very different vein to the mushroom thread - that combined a lot of fun (my favourite thread too) with, let's be honest, a fair amount of attacking of the original poster. Maybe, in retrospect, she was having a bad few days when that thread was happening? (There were areas where she didnt' come across well.) From the description of her illness, that would be more than understandable. Or were the responses to her post just too harsh? Or something else? Of course, we don't know. It's hard enough to judge the reality of a person even if we meet them every day, never mind from a combination of a MeFi post and an obituary, both of which are distorted snapshots. I guess my point here is that there's an element of respect and affection here that wasn't there in the mushroom post. I have no idea which is more justified, and I suspect neither do most of the people who've contributed to both threads.
