In order to head off such catastrophic scenarios, scientists agree we must reduce our carbon emissions by 70% within the next few years. Doing that would seriously undermine corporate profits, however, and so a more forward-thinking solution is needed. ...so they're more willing to destroy the environment while making a profit than change their tactics and make life btter for us all? the greed of people is incredible to me.

Robert Sheckley also had something like this in a short story -- a back pack unit would deploy a protective bubble around the hero every time it sensed something threatening. Of course, it malfunctions and begins to interpret everything as threatening, thereby trapping the guy in a persistent bubble.
