What is it about Heston that I find so funny? That edit of Planet of the Apes which cuts out everything but his dialogue was hilarious (at least for the first 15 minutes, when he's such a prick to the other crew). Re-framing him in this trailer really cracked me up too.

Color me unimpressed... The Shining is still the best one to date. Titanic 2 in a close second. That said, I've been trying to find a copy of "The Wizard" (1989) so I can turn it into the story of kids who prostitute their way across the country.

I'd say Must Love Jaws gives The Shining a good run for its money. Both seem very subtle in their execution - a few tweaks and splices, cornball music, and a story flipped upsidedown. This 10 Commandments one - mehh, maybe the idea is too vague perhaps, too arbitrary. The funny bits are just the things Heston says. And SLJ of course.

"you're a sharp-clawed, treacherous little. . .", *record-scratch*, *cut to scene of guy doing wide-eyed double-take*, *cut to scene of offended guy saying "did you hear that?" That was a good edit, and the fact that it's instantly recognizable as a trailer convention*, highlights the irony about these fake movies created through editing: real movie trailers are inventing fake movies too. Movie trailers are constantly inventing dialogue, jokes, and even plots for the movies they're advertising, that aren't in the actual movies. The weird part to me is, if the movie people think these invented jokes, dialogue, or plots are more attractive to audiences than what was really found in the movie, then why didn't they just actually put these kinds of jokes, dialogue, or plots in the movie to begin with? * I'll bet the record scratch thing is in at least 10 other trailers.

dgaicun, I've always found this a pet peeve of mine as well. specific shots in trailers that don't appear in the release. I blame the editor, mostly. Also, I thought that most studios outsource the trailer creation to someone other than the director anyway.

I didn't have the extra footage thing in mind, though I see that a lot too. I meant making new scenes, etc. by remixing the included footage. I've also noticed the advertisements for syndicated Simpsons often report the plot all wrong. It's almost like the announcer is making up what he thinks the episode is about from the accompanying clips. (these same advertisements seem to be national, not local)

Trailers are made by trailer companies, who just do that and nothing more. They're mostly geniuses, able to make even the worst of the worst look somewhat palatable. And since they're frequently working with the rough cut of the movie months before it's locked, they often end up using scenes that wind up on the cutting room floor. That's why you see stuff in the trailer that isn't in the final movie. As for using editing to take things out of context and completely change the story around... It's like those axe body spray comemrcials that posit that if you use axe, women will hump your leg. It's a commercial. It's fake. Don't believe it. And just to add... 10 Things feels more like a real trailer than Shining, which always felt forced to me.
