Windows only, no descriptions. If I know the name of the software, why not just use Google?

There were a number of sites which specialized in Mac share/freeware, but OS X forced many admins to drop support of legacy systems. VersionTracker, Tucows, and MacUpdate still carry the torch, while Freemacware and others are OS X centric. Those truly nostalgic for the old ways can visit the Beagle Brothers Museum, though the listed programs aren't available for download.

I'd be worried about downloading software from an unknown source. Could be infected by spyware, or something.

For those seaching for Macware, Hyperjeff has a great database, searchable by license (free, share, demo, etc.), kind (Aqua, Carbon, Unix, etc.), and type (audio, video, business...).
And, yes, there are descriptions.
