Blacksnake is a name that has fallen out of usage since common names of North American snakes were standardized more than half a century ago, because it could mean one of two very different species -- either the black racer (Coluber c. constrictor), a non-constricting, fast, terrestrial snake that bites first and asks questions later, or the black rat snake (Elaphe o. obsoleta), a larger, arboreal constrictor that is generally calmer, especially when full grown (it maxes out at 8½ feet, and is one of the largest snakes in the U.S.). "Pilot blacksnake" generally meant the black rat snake, whereas "blacksnake" usually meant the racer, I think. You can imagine the confusion. Both are found in West Virginia, I believe. For the life of me, I can't tell which was on the plane: a black rat snake wouldn't have been much to worry about (even wild ones are relatively placid when fully grown, and this species is widely kept as a pet; I myself have a few of the other subspecies); a racer would have been . . . exciting. Both, of course, are totally harmless, but that doesn't stop people from getting all melodramatic about it.
