The new music does suck. What's next, Eyewitness Action Newshour with the PBS I-Team? Cool kid, though. I used to watch the end of "The 700 Club" because it was on WPIX-TV right before Tom & Jerry. I ended up a hardcore atheist, natch.

I miss McNeil. He was one of the best journalists. Lehrer is good, but I do not like the way he, and everyone else on the News Hour, gives controversial figures patsy interviews. They aren't as nice as Larry King, but they never seem to ask the really biting follow up question. It's a minor complaint though. The News Hour is my main news source, at least tv news source.

Hah, I used to watch that show when I was a little kid Up untill I was in third grade I only ever saw PBS, since that was the only channel my mom let us watch. So I saw Newshour from time to time. I even remember the (apparently obsolete) theme music. Dunt dun nun nun dunt dunt bwomp bwomp bwomp!

From the accompanying video: "Are you concerned your little boy is going to grow up to be an unbelievable dork?" I thought that was sort of rude of the news interviewer, and my response would have been that no, it seems he's going to grow up to be more informed than your average American. I think it's great. I was into watching news programs as a kid too, because that was one of the things my parents watched, and keeping informed about what's going on is something that then stuck with me throughout my life. Hope he keeps up the interest and no one worries too much about him turning into a "dork".

Big fan of the McNeil-Lehrer NewHour since way back. Consistently the best news show on tv and one of the only three or four shows I would watch, then or now. Jimmy Jimmy's eyes are awesome. "Shiny teddy bear", indeed! :) Great story, thanks for the post.

I love this kid. I used to watch Compass (the supper-hour news program on CBC here on PEI) with my dad for as long as I can remember, sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of the TV. When I was 6 I got to visit the local CBC TV studio, and walk around the Compass set. I went up to the weather map, which was the old fashioned board with magnet symbols and markers, and gave a very serviceable weather report based on that day's weather that was still up on the board from the night before. And for the record, I did grow up to be a huge dork. :)

Huh. I loved the theme as a kid too. I would try to catch the end of the show since they would do the the extended version with the credits. Never got a cake out of it though.
