Is Word the word processing program? If so, ring it back so that you can do a spell check on "millionairre." Peace..ljust twitting you posted by Postroad at 1:35 PM on January 12, 2001

Zapata pulled the plug on word.com at least a couple months ago. posted by puppy kuddles at 2:23 PM on January 12, 2001
I think the fact that the responses here seem to be either a) "What's word?" or b) "Word's gone?" says it all about where it went and why. posted by aaron at 2:23 PM on January 12, 2001
Hmm... Sissyfight is still online, and it still links to Word.com. posted by waxpancake at 2:25 PM on January 12, 2001
Postroad: Word is an unusual literary Web zine that debuted in 1995-96, folded, was resurrected by Zapata, and now has apparently folded again because Zapata is ceasing all Internet operations.
They should call it the site with nine lives. posted by josholalia at 2:28 PM on January 12, 2001
Well, I hope they get a 10th. Looking at Evhead for the first time in months reminded me about the graphics at Word. They had some great ways to display their ads (which, I now know, nobody ever clicked)....ahh well.
Thanks for the info! posted by schlomo at 2:53 PM on January 12, 2001
The (re)loss of Word was something I really lamented ... I think it's second coming had a truly wonderful editorial mix. I also miss a couple of other really wonderful New York-based webzines such as Smug. posted by MattD at 4:02 PM on January 12, 2001
Any idea what day they took the site down? posted by waxpancake at 4:10 PM on January 12, 2001
It was there about 10 days ago, which was the last time I checked. posted by sylloge at 5:01 PM on January 12, 2001
Word was the best online magazine ever. Hopefully its designers will be memorialized in some future history of the internet as some of the most ingenious and original to ever put a gif on a web page.
And, its editors managed to present some truly interesting and well written personal narratives without the excessive introspectiveness and ego that marred so many of its imitators.
They hadn't had any new material for months, just a wild "summer vacation" link page to old (but solid) stuff.

I always kind of resented Word for the incredibly poor and awkward design of their comics section, which made it a pain in the ass to read Maakies. Ahhhh... Maakies. Love it love it. posted by wiremommy at 10:46 PM on January 12, 2001
