I think I can, I think I can...

But do snails really think, in the true sense of the word? It's interesting in that some problem solving was needed to bridge that gap, but ya gotta wonder what the thought process of a snail actually is.

I'm not even sure humans think in the true sense of the word.

Nature is just amazing. That such a low level organism has been hardwired with that level of adaptive survival response is mind blowing.

mating leopard slugs

Beautiful and disturbing. It's like a slow dance between life and death. I often think that human emotions in some ways mimic or are analogous to the behaviors of less developed animals (birds, fish, insects and even slugs etc...).

derail

When I was younger we used to leave the light on in front of our house when we got home. The light used to make sticks cast long shadows on our sidewalk. Slugs and sticks looked very similar. Leopard slugs. Big, three inchers. Sometimes there were 10, 12 in the 4 foot area from the driveway to the house. They would hide in the cracks between the sidewalk stones.

I don't know why but they triggered the bad feeling. You know the one when you're a kid, that these things are the epitome of evil. Anybody who feels the same way have any insight? This doesn't seem quite deserving of an AskMe

Anyway, getting from the car to the house was this strange sort of adventure, picking my way through the shadows. Shivering in terror and disgust when I came across a not-stick. I think that's what bothered me the most, the way they'd hide.

This picture totally triggers all those feelings.

Thanks for dragging up all these memories, Pink StainlessTail
