OSVids shows you how to install and use alternative operating systems. Currently demonstrating a wealth of Linux systems, Vista, and soon Mac OSX.

I'm sure that site will be plagued with requests on how to load an obscure build of Netware or BeOS onto a three month old laptop, or inquiries on why the OpenGL drivers for a Matrox or 3DFX card aren't recognized.

Heh. That's exactly what I was thinking. "Now we'll use vi to edit the config file so that we can actually use our hardware."

rsanheim capture my thoughts succinctly. I had a vague interest in O'Reilly's archive of various Linux distributions until the whole thing turned into "And here's another screenshot of KDE, lightly modified". Screenshots don't really do a whole lot to capture the differences (if any) between various distributions.

I haven't had to use vi to edit a config file in Linux in about 5 years. It has gotten a lot better recently.

Still, I'm wondering what the usefulness of this is. Why not just hand someone who is wondering about Linux a Knoppix CD, and let them go to town playing with it? And why would I care what the install looks like? That is the part of the system I'm going to use the least. Linux isn't Windows - you don't need to reinstall it regularly. You shouldn't need to reinstall it ever.

i think the site is aimed more at people considering trying an alternative OS, but wants to check them out a little first. that includes the installation.

Though some of these are obviously a bit less useful than others, overall it's an excellent idea for exposing the "correct" way of doing things in OSes where that is not always obvious. Installation is also especially important. Thanks for the link.
