TVOTR makes me happy (their first EP and album are great-but-not-OMGAWESOMEWTF, but they seem like the sort of band with nearly limitless potential, so I was much looking forward to more work from them). I've been anxious to see them live for quite some time, but haven't gotten the chance yet. And their new album's phenomenal (judging by the leak).

With regards to this post, I think one of the "TV On The Radio" links should've pointed to this blog o' theirs.

Their cover of Mr. Grieves (TVOTR) by the Pixies is something that I would hold up as the pinnacle of the covering art. It is the song, but is not the song and it takes the song apart and it puts the song back together. I am a nerd.

Rawk on, these guys are super-talented.

I'm quite curious what the setting is of these performances... sound check? I mean, even as 1st opener for a show TVOR would have more than 50 people in the audience.

And Peter Murphy sounds like a big ol' douche...

Looks like it was the show at Nissan Pavillion in Northern VA (outside DC), which means there are likely a lot of people seated. It is also bright out, so likely early so maybe a lot of NiN/PM fans haven't arrived yet for fear of their gothic skin getting some sun?

Stephin Merritt does a nice cover of Bela Lugosi's dead, though I've not ever come across a video of it.

Their cover of Mr. Grieves (TVOTR) by the Pixies is something that I would hold up as the pinnacle of the covering art.

Yes. It is a perfect example of how to make a song your own without fucking it up. Also, it takes Colbert-sized brass balls to take a Pixies song and make it acapella, and then pull it off with such aplomb.

I would probably be much more conservative when covering someone I near-idolize, unless I had the brilliant idea and sk1llz to pull off something more audacious. Otherwise you'll end up with an awful scary-disco version of Gouge Away, or something.

I saw this tour for Bauhaus and TVOTR - the last NIN I owned was Pretty Hate Machine and that was from a long time ago.

Despite having to play in full sunlight and to not-very-full stands, TV on The Radio were GREAT. I had some of their songs but bought a CD of theirs the next day.

Bauhaus didn't play as many "hits" as I would have liked. Although I did get a chill when they did She's In Parties, always my favorite. And points to Murphy, despite the cruelties of time, for putting on a show - he was one hard working man in that velvet cape in 80 degree weather!

I'm obviously slacking right now, because I didn't know about these videos (I burned out on this tour during the middle of last year). But it was the soundcheck performance for the Spiral fanclub members at the Nissan Pavillion show.

I saw NIN and Bauhaus in Detroit last weekend (but with Peaches instead of TVOTR). The three-act timing meant that it didn't get dark until halfway through Trent's show, so the opening acts lacked ... atmospherics. Also, at that show many many people didn't even seem to be there until just before NIN; there were a lot of empty seats for both openers.

Peaches had an incredible amount of energy, and Peter Murphy seemed to take a cue from her in terms of playing around on the stage. The audience energy started to come together during their set. My friend had seen him before, solo, and thought this show was 100x better. He did his own "Bela", but she'd seen this video already. Totally agree with Plinky, kudos for putting on a show.

If you don't think Trent did a great job with "Bela", try listening to Bauhaus mangle "Hurt" ... torrent ... just to be fair. ;-)
