The World's Most Amazing Dog (YouTube) A clip from Montel Williams' show about a dog born without front legs. The owner has trained it to walk upright. As my boyfriend said, "After watching this, I'll never complain about anything in my life again."

Great dog ... however, there's a two-legged dog in the film All the Real Girls. If I remember correctly, however, it only has it's two front legs. And yes, it walks on its "hands", if I remember correctly. I named a screenplay after it.

Yeah that was kind of oddball creepy how she just slid that in there. Montel apparently wasn't much interested in learning more about that either.

I don't know that I would have given this a shot. I probably would have been the type to put the dog out of her "misery". And I would have been wrong, and missed out on such a unique personality. Perhaps we humanize animals too much, and this dog is only doing the best she can, but damn it, she is amazing!

Someone always times their posts, because on a Saturday morning as I sit reading Metafilter with my coffee, someone times it that there's some hideously awesome Youtube video. Saturday mornings with wonderful doggies is the best thing evaarrr.

Getting all choked up with "OMG cutee!!!" is a weird combination. There's not only a 2-legged dog, there's a photo of 2-legged puppy.

This will give me nightmares. I mean, it's amazing and all, and also at times kind of funny looking, but the overall impression I get is some sort of demonic dog-human hybrid walking upright in a weird zombie shuffle.
No! This Can Not Be Real. This has got to be just some kind of 'Spaghetti Harvest' hoax. Otherwise that is just tooo mindblowing.

This reminds me of one of my favourite New Yorker cartoons: a penguin hovering/flying in midair, yelling at a group of other penguins just sitting on an iceberg below -'We just weren't flapping them hard enough!'.

As much as Faith is cute, with her walking and all...

Seriously, they make carts (basically wheelchairs) for dogs that lose a set of legs.

It can not be good for the dog's back or legs. Really, as cute as it is I think it's a little strange that they have her walk instead of getting her a cart.

Please. There is nothing wrong with calling yourself the mother of your only pet, nor letting said pet sleep in your bed. Nothing!

Yeah. Every time I see this (and I've seen it a few times now), I find myself torn between feeling good that someone cared enough about this dog to keep her and care for her, and feeling kind of icky that the dog seems to be a freakshow to gain attention for the owner. The owner seems a bit weird (not because she refers to herself as the dog's mother, and not because the dog sleeps in her bed, the former is pretty standard crazy dog lady stuff and the latter is only a problem with some dogs in some contexts, but then, all my dogs have slept on my bed, so I'm biased), and I wince at the beating that dog's hips must be taking (and I wonder how much harm this will do to the dog's quality and quantity of life in the long term). I guess I don't think the dog's being done any real favours by "walking" like this, a cart would be better, but a whole lot less showy.

Do professors commonly teach at high schools in the USA? Or is this just an english teacher with delusions of grandeur?

More importantly though...

"Faith, can you tell me how to make the most out of life? I'm thinking of taking up male modelling."

Having taken part in the training of a dog to just do "the basics" (sit, heel, stay, come, etc.), this is pretty amazing.
And the owner seems to care so deeply for this animal that she's probably at the vet's regularly, so the vet is going to notice (one hopes) if anything is going wrong with the dog's hind legs.

Now, if Faith teaches other doggies to do this, and they evolve thumbs, humanity may be screwed.

[and I'm trying hard to get & keep the phrases, "there was a divorce, there was a kidnapping, there was torture" out of my mind]

I, credulous, I'm having the same problem.
Maybe the producers contacted this family relating to those three factors, and when denied access to the graphic details (and permission to air them), the mom blurted out that she's got this two legged dog that can walk, would they be interested in doing a piece on that?

And as for the longevity of this dog's hind quarters, would carting the animal around prone for a prolonged period of time be an improvement? German Shepherd's suffer hip problems frequently, and they can be crippling to the point of being put down, too.

that English professor at High School comment made me laugh too. Mostly, because her introductory statement read like a high school expository writing assignment.

Regardless, I doubt I could have achieved such success in training a dog to do this, so good on her.

The Unfortunate Truth, April 20, 2006
Reviewer:	David David "David" (Oklahoma) -

Well, I wish I could rate this book however I have not and never will read the book. For those of you that have been mislead and have passsed judgement based on her fabrications allow me to shed some truth to all of this. My name is David and I am the unfortunate soul that spent 10 ugly years with this person. The author of this book wants everyone to believe that she has been a victim of a horrible tragedy. I, nor my wife have never in no way shape or form ever kidnapped or physically abused my two daughters. I wish I could say that I have never mentally or verbally abused them, however that would be a lie. I have said things about their mother in front of them and that simply was never the right thing to do. You see after several years of Judy's lies and fabrications it will make you say things you regret. To Laura and Caitlyn I appologize for that. I will always love you both dearly. As for Judy she is a very unhappy person in life. Judy is a 45 year old woman who has been terminated from 27 jobs that I can name over the last ten years which includes the teaching job she was just fired from, still lives at home with her parents and has been unable to put her past marriage behind her and move on without claiming she has been a victim her entire life. She is very smart and has a great deal of potential if she would just use it in a wise manner. When Judy and I divorced the girls lived with me because Judy put herself before them and I was awarded custody of them. They never lived with her until they turned the age of 12 which in Oklahoma is the age that children can elect to live with whomever they choose. We all know not all children are really choosing for the right reasons at that age. I will say I was strict about rules in my house. They had to attend school, which they have not for some time now, they were to be in bed by 10pm and home work had to be done. If I was such a horrible person why did my youngest daughter come to live with me voluntarily this past year. She left because she had challenges attending school. Not saying she is not bright because she is however after being with her mother for the last 4 years school was not a priority. I am signing out now and will never return to this sight ever again. But before everyone cast stones know that I have learned something myself and that is "Beleive half of what you see and none of what you hear". The loser in this entire deal are my daughters and this poor dog Faith. I'm not saying that the girls are not caring for her because I know they do, but this poor dog is being exploited. This story should have been about her incredible story yet Judy has turned it into her pity party. By the way some of the positive ratings this book has been given are by my daughters. I know because I know their nick names. Thanks. Sincerely, David

And as for the longevity of this dog's hind quarters, would carting the animal around prone for a prolonged period of time be an improvement?

Well, yes, because with a properly-fitted cart the dog's body would be in proper physical alignment and the hind legs would be performing their usual task (carrying approximately 40% of the weight, with the dog's body in proper relation to the ground, rather than carrying 100% of the dog's weight vertically, most quadrupeds carry less than half their bodyweight on their hind legs). The cart would just support the dog's front end, and the dog would push itself around with its hind legs, which is far more normal physically than walking upright. Animals suffer physical harm from prolonged periods of time out of proper alignment just as humans do, so I find it hard to understand why someone who claims to have the dog's best interests in mind would rather have it walk in an unnatural posture which will certainly have long-term physical consequences than use the technology available which would allow the dog to move around easily with its body in proper alignment. But that's just me.
