Hadn't seen this before, and it was pretty cool.

That's not at all the ending I was expecting. Very good.

Wow. Definitely ends the way no Mario game ever will.

Years ago, I sat alone in my room looking over the tear-stained remains of my shattered life. I could taste only the gunmetal in my mouth and could think only of her.

"Someday," I thought I heard her say, "Someday it will get better." Slowly I lowered the hammer, placed the gun on the table, and vommitted all my sadness, all my hurt, all my rage.

Because someday, someday I would see the purpose for my life. That's what she promised me.

After watching Mario fight for everything, I know now what my purpose is:

To watch that video again.

Suddenly, I must buy a Nintendo Wii.

But, seriously, that was really good, and genuinely touching at parts.

Nice action. Positively excrutiating Lucasian dialog.

It's the music really, that and the lovely red headed princess.

Wow, I totally forgot about this. Thanks for reminding me. I finally get to know how it ends!

Where was dazed_one at on this one?

That was really cool. From this faq:

What has given you the most difficulty during the development process of your new creation?

Animating each and every tiny little sprite... frame by frame by frame... It's a frightening undertaking when you have 70+ characters on the screen in all out war and it's up to you to move each one frame by frame and make sure they all are convincing and reminescent of Nintendos original Mario look/speed/feel.

I'm suprised. I assumed he had written some sort of crowd modeling system.

I'm impressed.

Watching this makes me think someone should make a Mario RTS. You've already got a huge selection of units for the badguys side.

You know what might be cool? Have a multiplayer thing where one player on each side has RTS controls for the Goombas/Mushroom people cannon fodder while a couple players on each side are Mario/Luigi and Bowser/Wario with platformer controls.

TheOnlyCoolTim: Please don't rape the Mario series. Go play Starcraft or something.

*makes a plan to play Yoshi's Island later tonight*

wow. impressive. loved the scoring - Philip Glass in a Mario flash film? very well done. despairing ending.

I have literally been reloading his deviantart site every month or so for the past two years. (...Interestingly, it isn't updated yet.)

Generally I love things like this, but it was just wayyy too slow for me. Guess it's time to take my ADD pills.

First time I heard of this thing, and watched it all the way through. As others said, surprisingly powerful. It's amazing what a little cinematic flair will do, eh?

Radiohead + Mario. I wonder how long before the RIAA notices. Because this make the intra-tubes slow for everyone else.

I have literally been waiting two years for this. I never thought it would happen.

It was everything I hoped it would be.

Man, it must be impossible to pump too much melodramatic music into a Mario Flash episode. Not that I don't enjoy them, but damn. I think I'm nicknaming that Requiem for Luigi.
posted by graventy at 9:23 PM on July 7, 2006

HOLY CRAP!

Seriously. That was SO much better than it had any right to be.

Anyone know what that music was when the final battle was just starting?

Simply awesome! Puts that hack George Lucas to shame.

Just pick up the pacing.

Thank god. I had given up hope on it ever getting finished.

I would have liked to see the blocks falling in the background of Koopa's castle at the end be shaped like Tetris pieces.
posted by painquale at 1:29 AM on July 8, 2006

painquale: me too!
also, part III was WAY too slow.
but overall, for execution and use of music, it kept me going for what? 25 minutes or so?
well done.

You know, considering the incredible amount of painstaking work that apparently took... why on EARTH didn't he take the time to spellcheck and capitalize properly? I mean.... it would have taken, what, 10 extra minutes? He can individually animate all the characters in two opposing armies, but can't take the time to look up "brethren"?

It's distracting, at least for this viewer, and reduced the impact of hundreds of hours of work. I don't expect Shakespeare, just .... uppercase M in "Mario".

That said, it was really cool, and I doubt I'll ever make anything that creative in my life. :)

Am I the only one who felt tears come to his eyes at more than one point in this series?
posted by neek at 5:51 AM on July 8, 2006

I second Malor - as cool as much of that was, the dialogue and atrocious spelling caused me physical discomfort in brain and stomach. What kind of entertainments do you have to grow up on to make something like that? Anime? The ludicrous tone reminded me strongly of late, lamented Ninjai. Did anyone else love that tiny little demon-hunter?

That final battle was great, though!
posted by waxbanks at 6:59 AM on July 8, 2006

I'm so glad to see this back and completed. His battle scenes are amazing.
posted by oraknabo at 9:56 AM on July 8, 2006

I liked it but I didn't like the toad sprite from mario 2(?) or bowsers fireballs since they didn't match the mario 1 palate used in the rest of the movie.
posted by I Foody at 11:38 AM on July 8, 2006

Yes. Finally! It was terrific.

neek, I hate to admit it but I welled up a few times there. It was the music. The music got to me.
posted by LeeJay at 12:41 PM on July 8, 2006

I tried watching the final part three times in two different browsers. Each time, my computer crashed halfway, and I had to reboot. No flash file has ever crashed my computer before.

That was not at all the ending I was expecting.
posted by martinrebas at 1:48 PM on July 8, 2006

Incredibly beautiful. The music, I agree.

I cringed every time mario says "my brother" instead of just "brother"
posted by Satapher at 7:05 PM on July 8, 2006

as cool as that was, it would have been 10% better if he had used the hot princess from mario 2 instead of the moderately scary princess from mario 1.

Great post. What a work.
Makes garry's mod look like cakewalk.

10% better? You couldn't break up the pathos of this work with such distraction:
